Always in My Heart
Isham Jones And His Orchestra Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I left my heart in San Francisco.
High on a hill it calls to me
to be where little cable cars
climb halfway to the stars!
The morning fog may chill the air,
I don't care!
My love waits there in San Francisco,
above the blue and windy sea.
When I come home to you, San Francisco,
your golden sun will shine for me!

I left my heart in San Francisco.
High on a hill it calls to me
to be where little cable cars
climb halfway to the stars!
The morning fog may chill the air,
I don't care!
My love waits there in San Francisco,

above the blue and windy sea.
When I come home to you, San Francisco,

Overall Meaning

your golden sun will shine for me!

The lyrics of this song resonate with the feeling of homesickness and longing for a loved one. The singer talks about leaving his heart in San Francisco, a city that he loves and misses dearly. The opening line of the song itself paints a picture of a heart-wrenching departure. The line conveys the idea that the singer, in his haste to leave, has forgotten something incredibly important, his heart, which he left behind in San Francisco.

The reference to the city's hills and its famous cable cars gives the listener a vivid picture of what San Francisco is like. The city that the singer longs to be in is high up on a hill, and he imagines traveling up the hill on the small cable cars that run on tracks. The fact that these cars climb "halfway to the stars" adds to the imagery of a magical, dreamy city. Despite the cold and misty weather that the city is known for, the singer declares that he does not care, for his true love waits for him in San Francisco. The idea that love is powerful enough to make a person brave the toughest of weather is an important symbol of the strength of the singer's feelings.

Overall, the lyrics of "Always in My Heart" are touching and poignant, expressing the idea that true love knows no boundaries and can transcend all difficulties.

Always wondered how Rust figured that out, unless it was in the session file. I do know Jones played his own tenor sax on the 1920-'25 Brunswick recordings, as there was no other tenor in the band. He was strictly a sweet player, who had a very big sound and vibrato, but doesn't _quite_ sound like the sweet tenorman on the Victor dates - see 2:48 on this cut. Maynard (Saxie) Mansfield was playing hot tenor by this time and could be playing the sweet stuff as well in Jones' place.
