It's the Blues
Isham Jones And His Orchestra Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Don't know when I've been so blue
Don't know what's come over you
You've found someone new and
Don't it make my brown eyes blue

I'll be fine when you're gone
I'll just cry all night long
Say it isn't true and
Don't it make my brown eyes blue

Tell me no secrets, tell me some lies
Give me no reasons, give me alibies
Tell me you love me and don't let me cry
Say anything but don't say goodbye

I didn't mean to treat you bad
Didn't know just what I had
But honey now I do
And don't it make my brown eyes

Don't it make my brown eyes
Don't it make my brown eyes blue

Overall Meaning

The Isham Jones And His Orchestra's song, "It's the Blues," is a soulful ballad that delves into the heartbreak of a lover who has been left behind for someone new. The lyrics express the pain and confusion of the singer as they try to come to terms with the loss of their love. The opening lines, "Don't know when I've been so blue, don't know what's come over you," set the tone for the entire song. The singer is lost and doesn't understand why they've been left behind. As the song progresses, the singer tries to hold on to some hope, singing, "Say it isn't true, and don't it make my brown eyes blue."

The chorus reveals the true emotions of the singer, as they plead with their former lover not to leave them alone. The lines "Tell me you love me and don't let me cry, say anything but don't say goodbye" show the desperation of the singer as they try to hold on to what they thought was a lifelong love. The song ends with the singer realizing that they made a mistake, but it's too late to change anything. The final lines, "Didn't know just what I had, but honey now I do, and don't it make my brown eyes blue" illustrate the realization and regret of the singer.

This chart is actually a window as to how bands sounded during the acoustical recording period. The Jean Goldkette version from 1924 is almost identical. This version was customized to give space for the piano solo. I'm thinking that Leroy Shield was paying a lot of attention to the Isham Jones recordings of the mid and late 1920's since a lot of the same time of scoring shows up in the incidental movie music he composed for the "Little Rascals", "Laurel & Hardy" and other Hal Roach shorts.

This is not an acoustical recording, but rather a Light-Ray Electrical Recording.
