Hailing from Montreal, Canada, Islands is a 6 piece band founded in 2005 by The Unicorns co-founder/songwriter Nick Thorburn (often performing as "Nick Diamonds") and drummer J'Aime Tambeur. Following the untimely disbandment of The Unicorns as they teetered on the brink of breaking through, Islands' debut release entitled Return to the Sea, with its quirky sounds and refreshing, catchy melodies includes collaborations with members of Arcade Fire and Wolf Parade. This debut picks up where The Unicorns left off and takes the music to new heights without departing from The Unicorns' unique if sometimes peculiar appeal.
Islands plays beautiful pop melodies, intertwined with elements of afro-pop, hip hop, and indie rock, among others. One of the main gimmicks of the band is the recorder brought over from The Unicorns, which is prominently featured in the song "Jogging Gorgeous Summer." Nick Diamonds rules over the band with an iron fist. Other members include: Patrice Agbokou, Aaron Harris, Alex Chow, Sebastian Chow, and Patrick Gregoire. Return To the Sea, their rookie effort, was released on April 4th, 2006 on the brand new label, Equator Records, and Rough Trade in the UK. Digital Distribution handled by Alpha Pup.
On May 20, 2008, Islands released its second album, Arm's Way, on Anti- Records.
On September 22, 2009 Islands released their third full length album, Vapours.
On February 14, 2012 Islands released their fourth full length album, A Sleep & A Forgetting.
On September 17, 2013 Islands released their fifth full length album, Ski Mask
On May 13, 2016 Islands released their sixth and seventh full length albums, Should I Remain Here, At Sea? and Taste.

Now in the sticky love nest sits a widow
The tree it fell on all the people
Gathered there to watch it topple
Now turn around, it's burning down
The city we live in
Should we mumble lies?
Let them have their way with us?
Wounds be by old enemies
Broke my heart to see
Foundations ripped apart
And investments fade away
I guess we got off to a bad start
No oxygen
What is the outcome?
Hungry humans
We've got to enslave them
We'll burn those bridges
When we come to them
I'm not just their leader
I'm also one of them
The food supply has been depleted
The river's ran dry just when it was needed
The rats come out to take it over
Singing, squeaking, "We built this city"
It's hard to breathe
But we couldn't leave
Nowhere left to go
Almost everybody died
Drank the tears from those who cried
We shriveled from the sodium
And a map was found with an X on it
So we followed it there
And what did we find?
An underground design
As we entered in to our surprise
Oxygen
Rivers of playgrounds ?
The ancients just stayed down
They never stopped moving
We stumbled towards them
But they locked all the barn doors
So we had to dig deeper
We had to dig deeper
And the deep was dark
I wanted to sleep forever
Wake up later, maybe never
We had to build a civilization
Let the planet focus on the planet's rotation
We tried, we tried
We really tried
But no one could do it
Happily alive
Never learned how to survive
We were humans being useless
No oxygen
What is the outcome?
Hungry humans
We've got to enslave them
We'll burn those bridges
When we come to them
I'm not just their leader
I'm also one of them
We're freed into oblivion
No traces of civilized living eating the earth
We're fading to oblivion
No traces of civilized living eaten by earth
The song "Humans" by Islands paints a picture of a dystopian future in which humans have depleted their resources, destroyed their own cities, and are left with nothing to sustain themselves. The lyrics contain a sense of despair and hopelessness, as the singer observes their own demise and recognizes their inability to turn things around.
The opening lines "Love bird, you flew into my window / Now in the sticky love nest sits a widow" can be interpreted as a metaphor for the destruction of a romantic relationship. The city they live in is burning down, and they wonder whether it is worth trying to fight or whether they should give up and submit to those who wish to exploit them.
The lyrics later describe the depletion of resources and the desperation of hunger, with the singer suggesting that enslaving their own kind might be the only way to survive. The song ends with an acknowledgment that humans have failed themselves and are fading away with no traces of their past forms of living.
Overall, "Humans" is a bleak commentary on humanity's tendency to destroy its own environment and waste the resources it has been given. It suggests that there is little hope for change, as humans continue to repeat the same mistakes.
