Little Scene
Isle of Q Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

You walk in the room
The music starts to play
The taste of Chardonnay is on your lips

Incense in the air
And candles everywhere
The big fish are all there for one more dip
I'm not part of you little scene
I'm not buying what you sell to me
You're so damn good
You've got it all down to a tee
I'm not part of your little clique
Your spaced out friends are gonna make me sick
Tell me great one
Tell me what it all means

You know it's time to leave
The who's who that you know
Are going to that show
You don't want to miss

And so your bed is made
You charm them all and trade
A cocktail and a line for a kiss

I'm not part of your little scene
I'm not buying what you sell to me
You're so damn good
You've got it all down to a tee
I'm not part of your little clique
Your spaced out friends are gonna make me sick
Tell me great one
Tell me what it all means

You don't know, but I'm on to you
You don't know, but I'm on to you

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Isle of Q's song Little Scene delve into the sense of disillusionment and detachment that comes with being an outsider looking in on a certain social scene. The song paints a picture of a crowded room filled with music, incense, and big fish (perhaps a metaphor for the wealthy and powerful people of the scene), and the singer- who is clearly not comfortable in this setting- observing it all from the outside. The singer watches on as the scene plays out, but is not fully invested in it- they are not part of the clique or buying into the flattery and charm of the scene's leaders. The singer is searching for something deeper, something more meaningful than the shallow and spaced-out conversations and the quick transactions of cocktails and lines for a kiss. The singer is not fooled by the scene's allure and ultimately expresses their disillusionment with it all.

The song's lyrics show the artist's keen observation of human behavior and the ability to capture those observations in a poignant and relatable way. The use of descriptive language enhances the song's narrative and creates a clear visual of the scene, conveying a sense of the singer's isolation and disconnection.

This whole album was FANTASTIC- every track- used to spin it when I DJ'd at WBCN in Boston. Yet another case of a band that deserved to get BIG- but instead acts like Bieber and Lil' Wayne make millions....

Great f'ing band! My brother introduced the CD to me back in 2001 when I was living in Florida. I had the honor of seeing them live at Jam On The River at Penns landing, later that same year. Damn shame these guys disbanded (around 2003, I think). I actually corresponded, via e-mail, with the guitarist Doug Kennedy- one hell of a cool guy. He sent me a promo video of this song on VHS that I still have!

I bought this album back when it was new. My local station played this song. That was like ten years ago. I haven't heard from them since.
