Come On Over
Isobel Campbell & Mark Lanegan Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Crawling through the night
Like a drunk
Brawling in a fight
How she gonna know what is
Right from wrong
[Chorus]
Sunday best
You're my favorite suit
You make the team
You're no substitute
I know baby I'm your
Favorite son, listen up babe
[Chorus]
Is it any wonder
Is it any wonder
I lay awake all night
Is it any wonder
On a Sunday soon
I see the light
Tell me baby
Tell me pretty lies
See the spider
Been out catching flies
Will you leave me I know it
Won't be long before you
[Chorus]
Is it any wonder
Is it any wonder
I lay awake all night
Is it any wonder
On a Sunday soon
I see the light
Like a blind man
Driving at the wheel
Like a hound dog
Scratching out a meal
You and I both know it
You belong
[Chorus]
The song "Come On Over" by Isobel Campbell begins with lyrics that metaphorically describe someone who is lost and uncertain, unsure of what is right from wrong. The use of the thief crawling in the night and the drunk brawling in a fight exemplifies the feeling of being lost and not knowing what direction to take. The chorus with the words "Come on over, turn me on" is a plea for someone to help guide the uncertain soul out of their confusion and into a better place.
The second verse of the song talks about Sunday best, and someone who is everyone's favorite suit and favorite son. The feelings expressed here show a deep sense of admiration and desire to have this person in one's life. However, there is still uncertainty and doubt, represented by the wondering if it's any wonder that the singer lay awake all night.
In the last verse, the metaphor of a spider catching flies is used to represent someone who is charming and able to manipulate others. The lyric "Will you leave me I know it, won't be long before you" shows the singer's acknowledgment of this person's inability to commit to any one thing or person. The song ends with the repetition of the chorus, which implies that the uncertainty and confusion still exist and that the plea for guidance is still relevant.

Wow! Back in '95 I briefly lived in a 3000' recording studio built by the drummer, Jeff, an Airforce Acoustic Engineer, and the guitarist, Mark. They turned me onto Mad Season, The Burning Red. Which, of course, led me to Screaming Trees. Then and again, Wow. Seattle's one of the few major cities I haven't seen yet. Keep on writin brother.
