Oh Sally don't you cry
A man's a man
Does the best he can
Oh Sally don't you cry
Oh Sally don't you moan
Oh Sally don't you moan
Give the dog a bone
Oh Sally don't you moan
Sally it ain't so bad
Sally it ain't so bad
I see you are mad
But he's the best you've had
Sally it ain't so bad
Oh Sally sail on by
Sweet Sally sail on by
Oh the times are hard when you question why
Oh Sally sail on by
Oh Sally sail on by
Oh Sally sail on by
The song "Sally Don't You Cry" by Isobel Campbell and Mark Lanegan contains three verses, each with an identical chorus line of "Oh Sally don't you cry." In the verses, the lyrics talk of a man doing the best he can and Sally should not cry and moan. The lyrics seem to be directed towards a woman named Sally who is experiencing some kind of heartbreak or difficulty in her life. The first verse states "a man's a man / Does the best he can" as if to say that Sally's partner may have done the best he could given the circumstances. The second verse encourages Sally to move on and stop complaining, "Go hang up the phone / Give the dog a bone / Oh Sally don't you moan." The third verse includes the lines "I see you are mad / But he's the best you've had / Sally it ain't so bad," which suggests that Sally's ex-boyfriend may not have been all bad and she should not dwell on the negative.
Overall, the song seems to be trying to offer Sally some comfort in a difficult time. The chorus lines of "Oh Sally don't you cry" are repeated throughout the song and serve to reinforce this message. The lyrics are simple, yet effective in conveying a message of hope and encouragement.
