Late
Issues Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Yeah I would wake up next to you
If I could (if I could, if I could).
And I would stare straight past them all to you.
I could never say it like I sing it,
Drunk talent cause we're fading,
But I'll be, I'll be, I'll be the first to say:

You could be my mistake-ake-ake,
I know I want it but I can't stay-ay-ay.
I can't stop thinking it, thinking it-it,
I can't stop thinking it, thinking it-it.
You could be my mistake-ake-ake,
I know I want it but I can't stay-ay-ay.
I can't stop thinking it, thinking it-it,
I can't stop thinking it, thinking it-it.
That it's a little too late-ate-a-a-ate, a little too late-ate-a-a-ate,
A little too late-ate-a-a-ate, a little too late-ate-a-a-ate.

And when the sun comes up again,
And we're gone (and we're gone),
We'll remember every beautiful thing that
Went wrong.
I could never say it like I scream it,
Drunk talent cause we're fading,
But I'll be, I'll be, I'll be the first to say:

You could be my mistake-ake-ake,
I know I want it but I can't stay-ay-ay.
I can't stop thinking it, thinking it-it,
I can't stop thinking it, thinking it-it.
You could be my mistake-ake-ake,
I know I want it but I can't stay-ay-ay.
I can't stop thinking it, thinking it-it,
I can't stop thinking it, thinking it-it.
That it's a little too late-ate-a-a-ate, a little too late-ate-a-a-ate,
A little too late-ate-a-a-ate, a little too late-ate-a-a-ate.

You could be my mistake-ake-ake,
I know I want it but I can't stay-ay-ay.
I can't stop thinking it, thinking it-it,
I can't stop thinking it, thinking it-it.
You could be my mistake-ake-ake,
I know I want it but I can't stay-ay-ay.
I can't stop thinking it, thinking it-it,

I can't stop thinking it, thinking it-it.
You could be my mistake.

Overall Meaning

The song "Late" by Issues is about the confusion and regret surrounding a relationship that may not have been the best decision in hindsight. The lyrics express a desire to be with someone but acknowledging that it may not be the best choice, using the metaphor of the person being a "mistake" that is hard to resist. The repeated line "a little too late" suggests that the realization of this mistake has come too late to prevent the inevitable consequences.

The opening stanza paints a picture of longing, with the singer expressing a desire to wake up next to the object of their affection. The second line, "I could never say it like I sing it," implies that the emotions are difficult to express in words or actions. The following lines suggest that alcohol may be involved in this expression, with "drunk talent" causing the singer to fade away.

The chorus repeats the phrase "you could be my mistake," which is the central theme of the song. Despite knowing that this person may not be the best match, the singer is still drawn to them, unable to stop thinking about them. The use of repetition emphasizes the internal struggle that the singer is going through.

The final verse suggests that the relationship has already ended, and the two parties are reminiscing about what went wrong. The use of the past tense and the reference to "every beautiful thing that went wrong" suggests a bittersweet nostalgia for something that was not meant to be.

Overall, "Late" by Issues is a thought-provoking exploration of the conflicting feelings that often come with relationships that may not have been the best decision.

I find it interesting that when a band does something different, people complain but when every song on the album is the same, they still complain. I prefer the heavier songs aswell, but this is so god damn catchy and you can't even deny it. If you listen to this entire album front to back with an open mind, you will jam the fuck out. I've never listened to a band's album where every song was COMPLETELY different from the last. The talent and diversity these group of guys bring to the genre is absolutely undeniable, so stoked for them.

@Richie Khan no modern day band could really live to those kind of bands, a lot of bands are great, but I don't see any of them topping the legends. It just sucks seeing all these new bands not trying their hardest to be that good.

As much as I agree with you, that isn't true haha. Listen to some old school metal bands such as Metallica, Maiden, black sabbath etc. They are legendary bands because every song they ever wrote stands on their own and bring a completely different sound and vibe. I don't see issues going as big as them but man, these dudes are definetly bringing a lost art back to a saturated genre, love their diversity and sound. I don't even like pop music but I am head banging hard to this song, cheers to all!

I can honestly say I love every single song by Issues.  There are only a handful of other bands I feel that way about.  It's just . . . the feels man.  The feels!

@havoren lol what do you mean by "beat my open mind"? Metal is my favorite genre but I listen to everything. L dispute, ratm, soad, smashing pumpkins, silverson pickups, etc etc etc. I listen to a good amount of the bands you listed, the others just don't resonate with my ears.
