It Bites Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Giving myself up to you is no reward
Does it all begin with something new?
Falling into something you can’t see
Chorus:
The lights go out at night I feel a space between us
The lights go out at night, I feel that I’m alone
As we stare into the sun
Getting myself into this and into your heart
Leading myself into view, I try to fall
Does it all begin with something new?
Falling into something you can’t feel
(I know something, you know something, we know something)
(Chorus)
Lights have gone down as you’re fading from view
Secretly I fall apart
For I am the one who will be strung along
Tied into your heart
Does it all begin with something new?
Falling into something you can’t feel
(I know something, you know something, we know something)
(Chorus)
The lyrics to It Bites's song "Lights" seem to reflect the struggle of giving oneself up to a new relationship. The singer acknowledges that getting involved in the first place was difficult, but letting go and trusting the other person is even harder. The chorus suggests a growing distance between the two, as the singer feels alone when the lights go out at night. However, there is a glimmer of hope as the singer suggests going out together and staring into the sun, perhaps as a way to bring them closer.
The second verse continues with the idea of falling into something new, but this time adds the uncertainty of not being able to feel it. There is also a hint of shared knowledge between the singer and their partner, which could suggest a deeper connection between them. The lyrics then culminate with a feeling of being strung along and tied to the other person's heart, despite the singer's reservations and fears.
Overall, "Lights" is a poignant reflection on the difficulties of opening oneself up to love and the mixed feelings that can come with it. The lyrics are open to interpretation and could resonate with anyone who has ever felt vulnerable in a relationship.

Blast from the past. Not many bands could pull this off live but they nailed it.

See, that's how you do it, play LIVE. Saw them twice, in the late 80s, excellent band.

I just realised this is the first song I ever heard live. The first gig I ever went to was Marillion in 87 and It Bites were the support. They opened with this song.

Amazing! A great find. I didn't see this at the time despite being an avid It Bites fan. An amazing live performance for such a complex arrangement. What a band!
