Preach
It Lives It Breathes Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Let me speak to the people that preach
It's not my heart
Or my tongue that's weak
So tell the devil that I'm his pastor
And tell my father
That I'm a bastard
Bastard!
To all the people
And let me speak
To the ones that preach
What will you say
When you're on your own?
It's not my heart
That's weak
Don't pray, pray, pray
Don't pray for us
Cause we don't need
We don't need your love
Don't pray, pray, pray
Don't pray for us
Cause we don't need
We don't need your love
We don't need your love
And let me speak
To all the people
And let me speak
To the ones that preach
What will you say
When you're on your own?
It's not my heart that's weak
It's not my heart
It's not my heart that's weak
It's not my tongue
That leaves us incomplete
What will you think about
When you've seen the end?
Will you think about
If you could play pretend?
What will you think about
When you've seen the end?
Will you think about
If you could play pretend?
And let me speak
To all the people
And let me speak
To the ones that preach
What will you say
When you're on your own?
It's not my heart that's weak
It's not my heart
It's not my heart that's weak
It's not my tongue
That leaves us incomplete
It's not my heart
It's not my heart that's weak
It's not my tongue
That leaves us incomplete
What will you think about
When you've seen the end?
Will you think about
If you could play pretend?
What will you think about
When you've seen the end?
Will you think about
If you could play pretend?
Let me speak,
Let me speak to the people that preach
It's not my heart
Or my tongue that's weak
So tell the devil that I'm his pastor
And tell my father
That I'm a bastard
The lyrics of "Preach" by It Lives It Breathes exude defiance and rebellion against the establishment that they feel is hypocritical and does not truly care for them. The song addresses those who preach to them and highlights their own strength and autonomy. The opening lines, "Let me speak, let me speak to the people that preach," set the tone of the song and establish the vocalist as a strong and independent voice.
The repeated line, "It's not my heart or my tongue that's weak," reinforces the notion that the vocalist will not be silenced or controlled by external forces. When they declare themselves the devil's pastor and call themselves a bastard, they are rejecting the judgment and condemnation that they have likely faced from those who preach.
The final lines of the song pose a thought-provoking question, "what will you think about when you've seen the end?", prompting the listener to reflect on what truly matters in life and what legacy they will leave behind. Overall, "Preach" is a powerful anthem of individualism and standing up against societal expectations that do not align with one's own beliefs and values.

When they played this song live at the part at 2:00 the lead singer got all sincere and sang in a higher sweetened voice which sounded way better than this professional recording. wish it had it on this track.
