my dad introduced me to bon iver when I was 12. It was after he got out of prison and was on and off drugs that we started seeing him again. He had this shitty car with shitty speakers but we'd sing to this song so loudly you couldnt hear the awful quality. I remember it was always cold out when he played this album, and the street lights were always out. My dads gone now and I cant bear listening to this album without tearing up. I miss my old man

This song is something I always come back to whenever I feel ready to accept my sadness and just let it wash over me. It feels like a gentle surrender to the truth...A melancholic acceptance of my own personal weakness after a struggle with myself.
It's really hard being faced with your weak points after trying your best to overcome them. Seeing how there are parts of you that will always be present and somehow always find a way to show.
It's so painful being witness to everything you fear deep down makes you unlovable. It's terrifying.
And at the same time, I find relief listening to this song and just surrendering to the way things are, after being defeated in the fight against myself.

There are songs out there that bring on memories and feelings of things that havent happened yet. This was one of those for me. Glimpses of me with people I havnt met being places Ive never been. I didnt know it at the time but those feelings, those visions of memories not yet expierienced eventually happened and in retrospect it all makes perfect sense. Being in a state of depression and allowing yourself to feel will also enlighten you to a brighter future. Allow yourself to feel now to make way for tomorrow.

Oddly enough, I never knew the lyrics to this song, but it always reminded me of swimming in a mountain lake on nights, on a holiday I took with my mother when I was a teenager. Because it's such a coincidence I like to think that, even if I didn't hear the lyrics, my subconscious did.

OK, I admit I heard this song first (like many) in that infamous House episode. That's not a detraction in any way because that show introduced me to many other great tunes. Let me say at the outset that when I first hear this song I was blown away. One of the freshest voices I've heard in a long time and really a great arrangement. That fact that Bon Iver is on the 4AD label just adds to their cred - this is the record label of New Order (nee Joy Division) fame that spawned such iconic bands as The Cocteau Twins, Dead Can Dance, Dif Juz, Colourbox, The Wolfgang Press, This Mortal Coil, and so many others. On this track, I especially like the quirky tempo changes and, of course Justin Vernon's ethereal voice is just so amazing: this song in gives me goosebumps every time I listen to it. And then I read an article on the genesis of this song and I was stopped cold. OK, I respect that Justin took off and went to live in the woods in a cabin in the woods for three months with minimal amenities and wrote this beautiful song (and later added tracks to it in the studio) but the process by which he created the lyrics really gave me pause. He says that he "tried phrases" and "played with words" until he found things that fit the chords he was noodling (my words). This made me think hard about the process of writing a song - something I've not done for a long time. What should come first? The melody or the lyrics? With this song - which we all agree we love I think - he constructed a melody and then evolved phrases and lyrics to fit the melody (and very arbitrarily with no real narrative thread). Is this how it should be? It perplexes me that I love the song but have a deep issue with how it was constructed. I can't legitimately criticize Vernon's process here but something about it leaves me feeling that something's not quite right in the manner in which this beautiful song was created. I suppose one could call this post-post-modern in the vein of the Cocteau Twins whose ethereal and beautiful nonsense lyrics (sounding Gaelic but totally made up) riveted us in the 80's but still I wonder if I'm being "conned". I will always love this song but I guess I'm always going to be skeptical about the lyrics and their meaning. Some will argue that Justin Vernon's mind was working on a subliminal level when he penned the lyrics and I suppose that's just fine but perhaps just not enough for me.

Just found out about this song yesterday. It’s crazy beautiful. Apple Music categorizes it as ‘alternative’, is that what it is? I have trouble finding this type of music genre. Like, the only thing I could describe it as is ‘cozy.’ Do you guys have any recommendations for similar music? I’d love to listen to them.

At the ending of my mother's funeral, i put my ipod on shuffle and this is the first song to pop up. The lyrics are stunning and connect me back to her in an amazing way. It breaks my heart to listen but brings me back to her all over again

As the days grow old and the light fades, happiness goes to darkness. Another birthday, another lose. The gentle and eerie strumming of the strings brings her face before me. Realizing now, as I grow older, she grew younger. A long six years now since I felt the warm glow of my mother. As I lay my eyes to rest for another year to be under my belt, the tides of black come flooding in. Drifting me back out to sea.
