RED
Ivy Levan Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Turn unto me for a penny worth in price.
A kiss never lies, if it's lips could stay shut
A silent society is reason enough.
Not a common kill it dead.
This poison equals sanity.
Take away sickened minds,
Let it bleed through the lines
Between valid and fantasy.
Catastrophe, impure, and unclean
Painful honesty of what is humanity?
Weak and exposed, don't cover the lens.
Vile perfection but broken at ends.
If it's dark, paint it red
Not a common kill it dead.
This poison equals sanity.
Take away sickened minds,
Let it bleed through the lines
Between valid and fantasy.
Still life dead photographs of hollow radiance.
Cold eyes and altered smiles on shells of emptyness.
We dull to shadows hypnotized by obvious
Please cut me inside out,
My misery shall vanish into dust...into dust...into dust. dust
Paint it red, kill it dead.
This poison equals sanity. (oh, oh)
If it's dark, paint it red
Not a common kill it dead.
This poison equals sanity.
If it's dark, paint it red
Not a common kill it dead.
The lyrics to Ivy Levan's song "Red" are a mix of imagery, metaphors, and emotions. The opening line, "Give me the sun, and I'll turn it to ice", sets the tone for the overall feeling of the song, which portrays a sense of darkness, pain, and twistedness. The line "Turn unto me for a penny worth in price" suggests the idea that people are willing to pay for validation, even if it costs them very little. The next line, "A kiss never lies, if it's lips could stay shut", is interesting because it suggests that kisses reveal the truth but words do not. However, the line also acknowledges the fact that kisses cannot stay silent forever.
The chorus, "If it's dark, paint it red, not a common kill it dead, this poison equals sanity" repeats throughout the song, and it's meaning is open to interpretation. It could refer to the idea of bringing life to the darkness or turning pain into passion. The next verse speaks to the idea that society tries to cover up sickness and flaws instead of embracing and dealing with them. The line "Vile perfection but broken at ends" suggests that the quest for perfection can lead to destruction.
The bridge of the song speaks to the numbness and emptiness that people often feel when they try to ignore or hide their pain. The last line, "Please cut me inside out, my misery shall vanish into dust" is a haunting plea to be seen and understood.

First song I heard from Ivy was "The Dame Says" and it only made me want to explore more of her art because she truly is a vocal artist and a good one at that. Michael Buble may have gotten me into Jazz but it's people like Ivy that keeps me into it.

Una hermosa voz y un talento desperdiciado. Y lo que más coraje da es que hay tanta bazofia que dizque canta, sobre todo acá en México, y a esos si se les da promoción. TE AMO IVY!!
