This song always makes me a little melancholy. I was young and my dad would always play it on the 8-track in the car. Those were good years when my parents were young. Now they’re aging and my mom has terminal cancer. I love my adult life, but I’d love to go back for a day.

Different simple things shine through at different times. I can see older music like this clearly, sometimes I wish I was older because the past feels so clear. But I'm always surprised by the wisdom those younger than me have to offer. It blindsides me like the future, and I realize the world grew up when I wasn't looking, and I'm a little too old for it. This song was released the day after Croce died in September of 1973. I remember it playing in late 1973 on the radio of my 455 HO Pontiac. That car would move you down the highway. I didn't even know Croce was dead at that time. Always enjoyed his music. A great talent.

I just learned about this recently, as I've been really getting into not just Croce's music, but his life and legacy (his son, A.J. Croce, has been recording since the 90's and is pretty good himself). An eerie but profound coincidence that he died the day before this song was released. Also, drinking kind of led me down the rabbit hole of learning about him, and come to find out the reason that he died was that his pilot was a reckless drunkard. Alcohol takes no prisoners.

I was young and free and travelling around the Corromandel in the 80s when i bought and heard Time in a bottle- the first and sadly last album (cassette) he ever released due to his untimely death in a plane crash that claimed the lives of a few other prominent musicians of the time. His talent for melody, composition and arrangement was obvious.
His lyrical grasp of the human condition was interspersed with a sense of empathy and humor and the music world lost a great man and a towering potential talent the day Jim Croce died. Rest in peace Jim.

I can safely move this masterfully orchestrated jam into the number one spot for my life song.

The most important line in the entire song though seems to fly under the radar. Jim says he's got all these things to do and places to go through the whole song but after the instrumental interlude it's almost as if the seriousness and intention of his voice elevate like no other time in the song. Like at that moment he stares straight into the camera and says "And I'm going to go there free." cue war drums Boom Boom Boom Boom while keeping his glare fixeded on the camera to drive home that this paticular statment will be, undoubtedly, the only accepted way his wishes will be carried out.

Thats when youre really living. Suddenly peoples opinions & criticisms become meaningless. Although you should always listen to the criticism of those whove earned your trust & love you the most. Were all blind to ourselves without that

The majority of people raised by supportive & capable parents naturally take this for granted, & theyre usually mystified when they meet adults that havent learned these things

I didnt have someone to teach me these life lessons while I was younger. Slow learner. Didnt start to dawn on me until I turned 37. Im 49 now. It took a lifetime, but it was worth the prolonged effort & the hard-won lessons learned 💜💙💚😎

I haven't heard this in years (probably came out when I was about 8yo) and I even momentarily forgot who sang it (but i vividly remembered it) when the title was mentioned in another YT video...His great voice and the simple words of this song are a great call to action... How long do we have left to wake up and get something done?

At my old house like 2 houses ago I think, my dad used to always turn this song on for me and me and him always used to listen to this song and another one called blaze of glory... man I can’t believe how easy I had it, I feel like now a days as a 13 year old I take family for granted to much, I remembered instead of phones and iPads it used to be toys and my dad and mom spending so much time with me... I miss the good old day of being only 4 years old, I miss those nights where I’d sit on the couch watching good tv shows with my dad like hey dude, I expect most people my age reading this to not know a show like that but it’s ok, anyways straight to the point I just miss the good old days. 🥺😢😩

I want this played at my funeral. This song is very personal to me. And, I remember exactly hearing on the radio that Jim had been killed in the plane crash. I just loved him.
