Bringing It Back
J.J. Cale Lyrics

In the jailhouse, I remember I got caught with too much soul
Bringing it back from mexico
Bringing it back from mexico
Spanish lights and pretty faces
Trip you out to where the place is
Load you up and let you go
Bringing it back from mexico
Across the border is where you get her
The wine's good, there ain't no better
I think I'll get me some to go
Bringing it back from mexico
Bringing it back from mexico
The lyrics of Bringing It Back by J.J. Cale tell the story of a man who got arrested for having too much soul. He remembers a trip to Mexico where he experienced the Spanish lights and pretty faces that took him to a different place. The trip included wine and a woman, and he now wants to go back and relive those moments.
The song is essentially about the desire to escape from one's reality by indulging in the pleasures of another place. The jailhouse can be interpreted as a metaphor for being trapped in mundane daily life. The reference to too much soul can be seen as an allusion to the man's desire to break free from the constraints of society and live life on his own terms.
The lyrics also suggest that Mexico is a place where one can experience a different kind of life. The Spanish lights and pretty faces are a representation of the vibrant and exotic culture in Mexico. The wine and woman are symbols of the freedom and pleasure that one can experience in a different place.
Overall, the song is a reflection of the desire to break free from the routine of everyday life and experience something new and exciting.

So there I was sitting in the Boulder Colorado jail in 1970 for being seen buying a bag of weed from a street dealer on the beat known as "the hill" which was a very hip and wide open place near the USB campus at the time (stupid me)I was age 20. They had a great radio station in Boulder and I would sit by the radio speaker in the rec room for hours to pass the time. All of a sudden I heard the best blues guitar I had ever heard on a song called "Call ME A doctor". This record had only been released a day or two prior to this I remember the DJ saying. Long story short within a day or two I was at the record store inquiring about someone called JJ Cale. They guy said yea that album just came in. Within 2 or 3 hours I was probably on my third listen. COULD NOT GET ENOUGH!! And I have been that way every since. I still think it is a tossup between this record "Naturally" "and his next record after this one called Really that are his best and to me my favorite records ever. I mean the guy was a true genius!!!! not just as an artist and songwriter but as a musician and PRODUCER. I believe he gave much of the credit to his friend Audey Ashworth as producer of his first few records early on just because he a huge fan also and also his spring board as to what songs he should use on records and a few other duties. That was just JJ humble and generous. We miss you man really really do!

We have loved J J Cale since the 70's, when I met my husband and he turned me on to his music. All around some of the best original music there is. Teamed with Eric Clapton is icing on the cake.

I was today years old when I found out that this song on my favorite bands’ (Kansas) 1st album was not written by them, but by J.J. Cale. I need to reevaluate my whole life now…😂

I grew-up with this tune, thinking it was a KANSAS song. I am glad to know the boys from the South Wind had good taste in tunes back then.
