City Girls
J.J. Cale Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

City girls they're all right
They just want you for the night
But when the morning comes at dawn
City girls they all gone
You know the daylight can be sad
When you feel that you've been had
Only night time brings the price
City girl she thinks it's right

What's a poor boy going to do
If he wants a girl like you
Can't afford no diamond rings
Or all those other fancy things
Only one thing I can give
A song down where you live

I'll sing to you hear the sound
City girl please stay around

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of J.J. Cale's song "City Girls" tells a story of a man who is interested in a city girl but knows that they are only interested in one thing - a one-night stand. The man is aware of the impermanence of their relationship and how these girls leave in the morning, leaving the singer to feel empty and sad as he realizes that he's been had. The song's lyrics convey the idea of how living in the city, where everything is fast-paced and instant, can lead to a superficial type of love that leaves the person yearning for more.

The singer expresses his affections in a humble way, admitting that he has nothing material to offer but a song. He indicates that he is willing to serenade her and hopes for her to stay around. The message of the song is that the city girls are not to be taken seriously as they do not seek real connections, just a fleeting moment of romance. The singer is aware of the negative feelings and heartbreak that come when these girls inevitably leave him.

J.J. Cale's "City Girls" is a relatable song that showcases the emotions behind love and its transient nature. The city girls represent a modern social phenomenon, the casual encounter, that lacks the depth and authenticity of genuine romance.

his music kinda makes me feel like I owe him. Just buying his albums doesn't compensate the awesomeness and joy that I get in return. Dear J.J. Cale, I love what you've done, did, and do!
