Cale had contact with worlds of music most rock fans are not aware of. His sense of cool was about the player not what the player wears or how he\she acts. The few times I got to hang with Cale and his wife Christine Lakeland's tour band, The Code, back in the 80's then 90's I was so surprised having formed impressions of the artist behind his recording sound and enigmatic concerts to find not the shrinking violet of the stage spotlight. Instead, off the stage he was gregarious, friendly, an irrepressible story-teller with an eye for telling character details and a fun-lovin' verbal riffer (whereas on guitar he's always so stingy with notes and onstage just as stingy with any remarks). Onstage with other players Cale was the most focused and perhaps finest "listener" of any accompanist of any musical genre or style that I've ever seen and listened to. But offstage, with Cale, one cup o' coffee and like me he'd become the "Motormouth" of one of his later songs.

Another contradiction was that his taste in music transcended time, place and fashion. This wistful song, "Outta Style" might be his most personally felt, especially as his older friends began dying off and the shared histories that Cale so clearly valued and was shaped by went with them. Most of the younger folk who migrated to Cale's timeless sounds and recording studio "atmospherics" didn't know or weren't too curious about the worlds Cale was so attentive to on the way to finding his own sound.

I've always hung with older folks who tended to tell more interesting stories of worlds I'd never known and so I can relate to that feeling of dis-orientation when friends with whom one shares history or just their stories disappear. Entire worlds and folk lore are lost to the void with these lives who go back underground. Even though Cale was not a laid-back person, his words describing himself in one interview is "I'm a nervous jerk," he was careful though to follow that and validate his interviewer's observation that he does like "laid-back music," and so that is what he likes to play.

Check out the web-site for the session jazz pianist on this track that I think Cale got substituted for a truly rare dud of a track still listed on the number 5 album (perhaps my favorite despite the dud track listed that was on my first vinyl copy, but by the time CD's came out and I finally upgraded I found that "Outta Style" with Beegie Adair was substituted. The piano opening and all the way through does something to my insides as does Cale's song and sentiments he captures so delicately.

I've tracked down some Beegie Adair Trio CD's and was delighted to find another Nashville session cat that left a memorable mark on a Cale album, namely sax player Denis Solee whose reed work on "Cloudy Day" one of the rare Cale instrumentals released on his Shelter records is a frequent and equally nuanced addition to the Beegie Adair Trio's albums, especially on her TRAVELIN' LIGHT album (no, it isn't the Cale track by that name. In fact, no reference to Cale sessions in any of Beegie's PR material, her Carnegie Hall concert and refined club audiences, while large and international, seem far removed from Cale's comfortable road-house and bar gig boisterous crowds).

There's Denis Solee and here's the link to their memorable combo take of "Route 66." Boy do I hope there are more unreleased sessions to come with Beegie Adair and Denis Solee in Cale's combos! The same session cat and studio rat crawling around the floor following loose wires who Lou Reed and Neil Young considered an electric guitarist of the highest rock order to rival Jimi Hendrix, loved to sit around his airstream in the Mojave Desert listening to every Windham Hill record ever issued that he'd be in Tower Records when he was in L.A. buying up! One of the coolest of the Tulsa Sound shuffling southern blues and Memphis to New Orleans grooving souls loved and deeply appreciated the artistry of dainty parlor and lounge small combo jazz. Joni Mitchell really got at a hard-earned truth on her 1977 break-through album DON JUAN'S RECKLESS DAUGHTER with her observation in the multi-tracked choral OVERTURE\COTTON AVENUE as the ballet bass of Jaco Pastorious glides around and over her Eric Andersen taught electro-acoustic guitar tunings and outside jazz chords of her own aural 'vision' or of Charles Mingus's aural 'vision': "If ya got a place like that...Ya jest have to go there\And if you've got no place special...\Well, then, my dear\You just go no place special...(cascading "Hey, hey, hey"s...) With Cale the most everyday and mundane could blossom into "some place spe-cial..."

Why is this song Out Of Style on CD versions and some LP versions of 5 and under the incorrect title of Katy Cool Lady? Out Of Style was issued on Rewind - Unreleased Recordings back in 2007! Is Katy Cool Lady on original vinyl LP versions of 5?
