Everybody's Talking
J.Livingston Orchestra & Singers Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Everybody's talkin' at me
I don't hear a word their sayin'
Only the echos of my mind
People stop and stare
I can't see their faces
Only the shadows of their eyes

I'm goin' where the sun keeps shinin'
Through the pourin' rain
Goin where the weather suits my clothes
Bankin off of the northeast winds

Sailin on summer breeze
And skippin over the ocean like a stone
I'm goin' where the sun keeps shinin'
Through the pourin' rain

Goin where the weather suits my clothes
Bankin off of the northeast winds
Sailin on summer breeze
And skippin over the ocean like a stone

Everybody's talkin' at me
Can't hear a word their sayin'
Only the echos of my mind
I won't let you leave my love behind

No I won't let you leave
I won't let you leave my love behind

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Everybody's Talking by J.Livingston Orchestra & Singers express a feeling of being disconnected and numb to the world around them. The singer seems to be lost in their own thoughts and unable to engage with the people and environment around them. The first verse exemplifies this feeling; the singer hears the people talking but it seems their words do not reach them. They are surrounded by a world that they cannot fully see or hear. This sense of detachment is reflected in the chorus as well, as the singer describes going to a place where no one else can follow, where they do not have to engage with the world if they do not want to.

However, "Everybody's Talking" is not a bleak or hopeless song. The singer takes comfort in the idea of going to a place where they can be themselves and find peace. The chorus is a celebration of freedom and the joy that comes with it. The image of sailing on a summer breeze and skipping over the ocean like a stone is one of carefree abandon - the singer is unburdened and free to move as they please. Even the final lines of the song, where the singer declares their refusal to let their love go, are a testament to the power that connection can hold over even the most disconnected person.
