Heartbreak
J.O.M.O. Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

There's a sign on the wall
And it's written in stone
That love can't make it alone
This far, or this high
I'm not the one
For a heartbreak dance
I reap my reward by making a stand
On faith regained
So question your beliefs
When you crawl up to win
Safety is when you sleep
On somebody's knee
(Sleeping on somebody that you need)
This city isn't changing
As fast as it seems
It's just your anxiety playing
With the time you need
To break even
I'm gonna keep you by my side
I'm gonna keep you in the fight tonight
When it all comes down to
Making one last noise
Oblivious to the choice
Of writing one more word
Of saying what I want
To question my beliefs
When I crawl up to see
That safety is when you sleep
On somebody's knee
(Sleeping on somebody that you need)
I don't know
How to walk
From where I am from
To where I belong
But I have no choice
And the path is clear

I will hold my breath
When I draw it near

Overall Meaning

In "Heartbreak," J.O.M.O. sings about the challenges of love and relationships. The lyrics suggest that love alone is not enough to sustain a romantic partnership. In the first verse, the sign on the wall suggests that there are certain things that love cannot overcome. While love can bring people closer together, J.O.M.O. suggests that it may not be enough to keep them together in the long run. Instead of engaging in a "heartbreak dance," the singer takes a stand, relying on faith to move on from heartbreak.

The chorus of the song suggests that safety and comfort can be found in the arms of someone you love. Sleeping on somebody's knee is a metaphor for finding warmth and safety in the embrace of a romantic partner. The second verse suggests that the city isn't changing, it is just our own anxiety and pressure that make us feel like everything is moving too quickly. When we are struggling to keep up, it can be difficult to break even.

The final verse is about taking a journey toward a new and unknown destination. The singer doesn't know how to walk from where they are to where they belong, but they have no choice but to try. The path may be clear, but it is still uncertain and requires a leap of faith.
