Who Am I
J.Period & Big Daddy Kane Lyrics

Take a look at me
It's a reality
That you will never know what's deep inside my heart
But you need to know
My life is not a show
The music plays, I can't control what's in my soul

J.A.E has some bad days but that's okay
I am only human, you 'gotta realise
Never 'gonna change a thing
No matter what they do or say
'Gonna live my life my way
Step by step and day by day

What you see is what you get (What you get)
No need to pretend (Yeah, yeah)
Proud to say it's who I am (That's who I am)
Can you see me when I smile?
When I'm feeling down
This is who I am

What you see is what you get
No need to pretend
Proud to say it's who I am (That's who I am)
Can you see me when I smile?
When I'm feeling down (You better know)
This is who I am

I won't compromise
But we need to realise
All the hopes and dreams that I've had all my life
I won't allow my fame
To blow up my brain
This is not a game so don't play with my name

J.A.E has some bad days but that's okay (That's okay)
I am only human, you 'gotta realise
Never 'gonna change a thing
No matter what they do or say
I'm 'gonna live my life my way
Step by step and day by day

What you see is what you get
No need to pretend
Proud to say it's, who I am (Is who I am)
Can you see me when I smile?
When I'm feeling down (Better know)
This is who I am

What you see is what you get
No need to pretend (No need to pretend)
Proud to say it's who I am (Who I am)
Can you see me when I smile?
When I'm feeling down (Better know)
This is who I am

It's who I am

It's who I am

(Better know) You better know

What you see is what you get (What you get)
No need to pretend
Proud to say it's who I am (Who I am)
Can you see me when I smile? (When I smile)
When I'm feeling down (Better know)
This is who I am

Yay, yay, yay, yeah
Yay, yay, yay, yay, yay, yeah

Yay, yay, yay, yeah
Yay, yay, yay, yay, yay, yeah

Yay, yay, yay, yeah
Yay, yay, yay, yay, yay, yeah

Yay, yay, yay, yeah
Yay, yay, yay, yay, yay, yeah

What you see is what you get
No need to pretend
Proud to say it's who I am
See me when I smile?
When I'm feeling down (Better know)
This is who I am

See is what you get
No need to pretend
Proud to say it's who I am
See me when I smile?

When I'm feeling down (Better know)
This is who I am

Overall Meaning

The song "Who Am I" by J.Period and Big Daddy Kane is a powerful commentary on identity and the struggles faced by black people in America. The first verse speaks to the history of African Americans being taken from their homeland and forced into slavery, where they were stripped of their identities and culture. Big Daddy Kane describes the way in which his mind was poisoned to believe that black people were inferior in America, leading to a sense of confusion and questioning of self. The second verse speaks to Kane's own experience as a rapper, navigating the pressures of fame and success while also trying to stay true to himself and his roots. The final verse features Gamilah Shabazz speaking on her own struggles as a black woman, and the need to stay true to oneself and fight for equal opportunity.

Throughout the song, the theme of identity runs deep, with each speaker pondering the question of "who am I?" and wrestling with the complexities of race, gender, and culture. The lyrics are a powerful statement on the systemic racism and oppression faced by black people in America, asking listeners to reflect on their own experiences and identities.
