Waiting for summer, his pastures to change
The cowboy anxiously waits for the summer season and a transition in scenery to his grazing pastures.

As the moon begins to rise, the cowboy sits by a fire he built.

Thinking about women and glasses of beer
The cowboy's thoughts drift to women and drinking glasses of beer.

And closing his eyes as the doggies retire
With his eyes closed, the cowboy listens as the cattle (doggies) retire for the evening.

He sings out a song which is soft but it's clear
The cowboy sings a tune that is soft and clear.

As if maybe someone could hear
The cowboy sings, hopeful that someone will hear him.

Goodnight you moonlight ladies
The cowboy says goodnight to the moon and the women who may be out in the evening light.

The cowboy addresses someone named James, wishing him a peaceful sleep.

Deep greens and blues are the colors I choose
The cowboy is fond of the colors dark green and blue and chooses them as his favorites.

Won't you let me go down in my dreams
The cowboy is asking for permission to enter the land of dreams.

He once again wishes James a restful sleep.

Now the first of December was covered with snow
The first day of December had snow covering the ground.

So was the turnpike from Stockbridge to Boston
The road from Stockbridge to Boston was also covered in snow.

The Berkshires seemed dream-like on account of that frosting
Due to the snowy weather the Berkshires appeared as if they were in a dreamlike state.

The cowboy has traveled ten miles thus far but has a much longer distance to reach his destination.

There's a song that they sing when they take to the highway
A song is sung by people who venture onto the highway.

A song that they sing when they take to the sea
Another song is sung by people who travel by sea.

A song that they sing of their home in the sky
There is also a song sung by people about their home in the sky.

Maybe you can believe it if it helps you to sleep
Others may choose to believe these songs if it helps them sleep at night.

But singing works just fine for me
The cowboy, however, finds that singing to himself is enough to put him to sleep each night.
