The Promised Land
J.T. Taylor Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

The journey has been hard and long
My morning eyes are bleary
Tired of jumping over fences
Of this crazy world I'm weary
As I look down that way ahead
Perhaps my eyes deceive me
Sometimes it's close enough to touch
Sometimes I think I'm dreaming

Around me on all sides I see
Thieves and lawyers claiming
Insurance men say they're your friends
But your life they're slowly draining
I won't believe their promises
Don't listen to their scheming
Their breath is wasted in the wind
As I wander off day dreaming

I'm going to lay to rest my weary head
No more spinning round and round
My days will be my own to keep
When I wind that clock forever down
Do all the things I've wanted and
Still have time in hand
This promise to myself I'll keep
When I reach that promised land

Sometimes that rainbow seems so near
In immaculate deception
I almost touch it when that road
Changes its direction
Those voices offer me bad news
With shallow sophistication
And pictures of that crock of gold
In my imagination

I'm going to lay to rest my weary head
No more spinning round and round
My days will be my own to keep
When I wind that clock forever down
Do all the things I've wanted and
Still have time in hand
This promise to myself I'll keep
When I reach that promised land

When I get to that promised land, sit on that golden shore
I'll offer up thanksgiving, I'll tread that wheel no more
I'll tell myself breathe easy now, cast off that ball of lead
Forget about that old grey cloud that hung around your head

I'm out of gear I'm in freewheel
I'm going through the motions
Yet sometimes in my heart I feel
I've swum ten thousand oceans
Not looking for a bigger deal
Or mountains to be climbing
Just leave me with this song to sing
Don't count the cost of rhyming

I'm going to lay to rest my weary head
No more spinning round and round
My days will be my own to keep
When I wind that clock forever down
Do all the things I've wanted and
Still have time in hand

This promise to myself I'll keep
When I reach that promised land

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of J.T. Taylor's song The Promised Land tell the story of a person who has grown tired of the hardships of the world and is searching for a place of peace and rest. The singer is exhausted from all the jumping over fences and the never-ending struggles of life. They see thieves and lawyers on all sides, people who claim to be their friends, but who are slowly draining the life out of them. The singer doesn't believe their promises, and their words are wasted in the wind.

The dream of a better life is something that has kept the singer going through all the challenges, and they feel that they are getting closer to that "promised land." They see the rainbow in the distance, but they know that it's just an illusion, a trick of the light. They hear voices offering them bad news, but they won't listen. They will keep moving forward until they reach their destination.

The repeated refrain of "I'm going to lay to rest my weary head" is a powerful statement of the singer's desire for rest and peace. They want to be free from the constant struggles of life, to have time to do the things they've always wanted to do. They are determined to keep that promise to themselves, to find that promised land where they can be at peace.

The '80s, dude, what a rad era, right? We all had these big dreams, believing the future was as bright as a California sunrise. We were told that life was a breeze, and the good times would just keep rollin'.

But here's the flip side, man. After the '80s, things kinda lost their luster. Those dreams we were sold? They started to crumble like an old sandcastle at high tide. The '90s came in, and it felt like the party was over.

Remember that line about "smoldering ice, concrete, and steel"? Well, that's the '90s++, dude. The dreamy beach vibes were replaced by skyscrapers and office cubicles. It was like the ocean went flat.

And the common man, he's been through it all before. Those promises got old, man. The same old story with different actors. It was like, "Come on, not again!" The magic of the '80s feels like a distant memory.

So, it's not just about reminiscing the good times of the '80s. It's about facing the reality of what came afterward. We're talking about economic ups and downs, changing cultures, and, well, life just moving on.

But, you know what, dude? We can still chase those vibes. The '80s are out there, we just gotta find em' and keep their spirit alive, man.

Even tho this song was never in the movie, I've ALWAYS loved this song, even as a kid. It was when I became an adult that I understood the message. Totally appropriate for the election season. Just listen to the words.
