What most impressed the young Joseph Auer was a very "strange metal sounding robot music", that he used to hear when his mother drove through the Chicago streets late at night, (at this time his mother had sold the flat and lived out of her car as well as odd hotel rooms).
In 1987 his father was transfered to work in York, England. This had two effects. One was the re-exposure to House Music and Techno, the other was the chance meeting with local muscians, label runners and all-round local music heroes David Moss and Beaumont Hannet. The result was a complete 100% change in future plans. Inspired more now by the bleeps, klonks and bass coming out of Leeds and Sheffield than the harsh designer electronics from Detroit he set about looking for a way to express his perspective on the music he had heard and was hearing.

The song "Nine Pound Hammer" is a traditional American folk song that dates back to the 20th century. The song is about an individual who is struggling to do the work that is required of them because the weight of the tool is too heavy. The singer compares themselves to the hammer, stating that it's a little too heavy for their size, which implies that they feel inadequate for the job at hand. The singer continues to express their frustration about being unable to work and how difficult it is to move forward when the wheels won't go. They sing about traveling up to the mountain to see their loved one and not returning, suggesting that they're running away from their problems.
The chorus is repeated throughout the song and is meant to drive the message of the song home. It's a simple refrain that emphasizes the weight of the hammer and the struggle that the singer is facing. Additionally, the song speaks to the death of John Henry, who was a legendary African American figure known for his strength and his ability to lay railroad track with a hammer. The singer claims that the nine-pound hammer did not kill John Henry, but also expresses their fear of being unable to match the strength of John Henry.
Overall, "Nine Pound Hammer" is a song about struggling to meet the demands of one's work and feeling inadequate in the face of difficult tasks.
