J. D. Sumner Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Hear that lonesome winter bird
He sounds too blue to fly
The midnight train is whining low
I'm so lonesome I could cry

Did you ever see a robin weep
When leaves began to die?
That means he's lost the will to live
I'm so lonesome I could cry

The silence of a falling star
Lights up a purple sky
And as I wonder where you are

I'm so lonesome I could cry
I'm so lonesome I could cry

Overall Meaning

These lyrics describe the feeling of acute loneliness and isolation. The first verse references a winter bird that sounds too sad to fly, which sets the tone for the rest of the song. The singer then compares their own loneliness to that of a robin who weeps when leaves begin to die. This emphasizes the importance of losing something that brings life and vibrancy to the world, just like the singer has lost the person they long for. The second verse then relies on visual imagery, describing the silence of a falling star lighting up a purple sky as the singer wonders where the person they are missing could be. The repetition of “I’m so lonesome I could cry” at the end of each verse emphasizes just how intense this feeling of loneliness is.

The overall effect of this song is melancholic and sorrowful, creating a vivid image of a person who feels completely disconnected from the world around them. The lyrics evoke a sense of hopelessness and despair, making it a powerful artistic expression of intense emotions.

J.D. told me he was tired when he recorded this album. They finished an Elvis tour and Mary drove him immediately to South Carolina from Nashville to record . No matter what it was excellent as usual.

@PAULOBASS77

In the end, he reached a D1 and returned to G1. This is J.D.

How can I get this record on either c.d. or album?

@RUBEGRAY

The only way I can think of would be if I had your email address I could send you the audio tracks in digital format. The album itself I have never seen anywhere. It might be on Amazon.

@TheBim1987

 Hi! Rubegray
Thanks for the offer.
My e-mail address is tc@mjrcc.net
I met J.D. in 1980 & did an interview with him for my radio show & what a great guy he was.
I have the hour long show on c.d. so if you would like a copy please send me your home address in your e-mail to my private e-mail & I will mail you a copy.
I'm sorry I don't know how to send through zip files or whatever it's called as I'm a bit techno illiterate being an old guy who can just about type an e-mail & log on to you tube. I think I can open a zip file or however you send it, if not I'm sure my 3 year old grand child will know, as they seem to be better at that sort of thing than us oldies, ha, ha!
Thanks again for your help.
Best Wishes & keep listening to the best.
T.C.
