Last Kiss
J. Frank. Wilson Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Well, where oh where can my baby be?
The Lord took her away from me.
She's gone to heaven, so I got to be good,
So I can see my baby when I leave this world.

We were out on a date in my daddy's car.
We hadn't driven very far.
There in the road, straight ahead ...
The car was stalled, the engine was dead.

I couldn't stop, so I swerved to the right.
Never forget the sound that night ...
The cryin' tires, the bustin' glass.
The painful scream that I heard last.

Well, where oh where can my baby be?
The Lord took her away from me.
She's gone to heaven, so I got to be good,
So I can see my baby when I leave this world.

Well, when I woke up, the rain was pourin' down.
There were people standing all around.
Something warm running in my eyes,
But I found my baby somehow that night.

I raised her head, and when she smiled, and said,
"Hold me darling for a little while."
I held her close. I kissed her our last kiss.
I found the love that I knew I would miss.

But now she's gone, even though I hold her tight.
I lost my love ... my life, that night.

Well, where oh where can my baby be?
The Lord took her away from me.

She's gone to heaven, so I got to be good,
So I can see my baby when I leave this world.

Overall Meaning

The song "Last Kiss" by J. Frank Wilson & The Cavaliers is a heart-wrenching story of young love, lost too soon. The singer recounts the night when he was out on a date with his girlfriend in his father's car. They hadn't driven very far when they came across a stalled car in the middle of the road. The singer couldn't stop in time and swerved to the right, resulting in a crash. The singer hears the painful scream of his girlfriend as he was unable to save her from the accident.

As the singer wakes up from the accident, it starts to rain and he finds people gathered around him. He sees that his girlfriend is lying next to him and holds her close. She asks him to hold her for a little while, and the singer knows it's their last kiss. He finds the love that he knew he would miss, but sadly, she passes away that night. The song ends with the singer hoping to do good deeds so that he can see his girlfriend again when he leaves this world.
