J. Geils Band Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I didn't take the warning
I really didn't care
I had already gone too far
To let them steal my share

So, like a fool I took 'em on
And as my anger cool
I realized I could take all mine
And skip off with theirs, too

I know I must be crazy
I'm bound to wake up dead

Somebody, somebody
Waitin' outside my back door
Somebody, somebody
Tryin' to even up the score

I figured I should lay real low
And stayed away from town
I covered up all my moves
So, it'd be hard to track me down

But I started gettin' shaky
And I paced around the floor
Hiding out all alone
I couldn't take much more

Just sitting 'round here waitin'
Is drivin' me up the wall

Somebody, somebody
Waitin' outside my back door
Somebody, somebody
Tryin' to even up the score

So, I called up my old friend Marlene
Who was lookin' for some fun
I got drunk and like a fool
I told her, what I'd done

I heard them knockin' at my door
They got to me at last
It don't take much to figure out
How they'd found me out so fast

And when I looked for my Marlene
I saw that she was gone

Somebody, somebody
Waitin' outside my back door
Somebody somebody
Tryin' to even up the score

Somebody, somebody
Waitin' outside my back door
Somebody, somebody
Tryin' to even up the score

Somebody, somebody
Waitin' outside my back door

Somebody, somebody
Tryin' to even up the score

Overall Meaning

The J. Geils Band's song "Somebody" is about a man who knowingly takes a risk and ends up stealing from someone he shouldn't have. He didn't care about the warning he received and thought that he could get away with stealing from them without repercussions. However, he ends up getting paranoid and starts to feel as though someone is out to get him. He even seeks comfort from a friend but ends up being betrayed because of his actions. The song is ultimately about the consequences of one's actions and the guilt that comes with it.

The lyrics in "Somebody" are expressed through descriptive storytelling with the use of metaphors, symbols, and imagery. The lyrics effectively create a sense of tension and suspense as the man's paranoia gradually increases. The chorus "Somebody, somebody, waitin' outside my back door" repeats throughout the song to emphasize the man's fear and the imminent danger that he knows he's facing.

Interestingly, the song has a jazzy and upbeat melody, which contrasts the dark storyline and subject of the song. The song was recorded in 1970 and has been covered by several other artists, including Etta James and Tedeschi Trucks Band. The J. Geils Band is known for their R&B and blues rock sound and had several hits throughout the 70s and 80s. In summary, "Somebody" is a cautionary tale of how one wrong decision can have lasting consequences.
