J. J. Barnes Lyrics

I'll take the lead Everybody follow me
Self made king, yes I made the beat
Go ahead now, get up on your feet
I understand this ain't what you wanna hear
I spit anyway don't got no fear
So you gone know me by the time I'm out of here
I want finer things and won't settle for less
Hoes thinking there's an S on my chest
Told the world I was doing big things
Made a list of all the shit I overcame
To make sure I don't go back to my ways
I remember writing rhymes on my lunch break
Clocking out going home smoke some more dank
get the K-9 letting out Rampage
Kill them all feed them to the dogs
Might fall can't afford for to fold
Look at me now I'm doing shows
1 ,2 ,left ,right combo
Fuck your feelings I will never tip toe
I'm a goblin Willem Defao
Peter Parker where'd the fuck he go
Young boy ain't never coming home
Thru the game I obtained dedication
Life's tough that's my motivation
She threw it back like a post on Thursday
Got damn girl I can tell you're thirsty
But I just wonder where you at if you in to me
It's all the same I just do this shit way differently
Back, back it up before you try to step to me
I wanna make it in the game don't belittle me
I don't give a fuck you do not believe in me
It ain't hard to see I'm pointing out my enemies
But I don't focus on the negative I'm living free
Got to come in with a bang like a C4
Everybody always talking better do more
Yall don't really do enough coming up short
I remember living back there in Norwalk
Life wasn't so bad in the back room
Then again I was kid what do I know
With my brothers playing catch on 163rd
Got my cousin with us too call him Chente
Yeah we do what we do fuck what you say
I did everything I could to carry my weight
Drawing up new plays call me McVay
Yeah Kicking shit down call me Liu Kang
Come alive in the knight like Bruce Wayne

No no I don't bang semi auto
Yea I came and I conquered I'm out though

JJ Barnes is immense. He should be far better known

@chrisrhythm

It was on a trip to Miami in 1968, Ian Levine recalls that he made a discovery that was to change his whole outlook of soul music. He took the single back to his Hotel thinking he was going to get a Memphis-style non! Motown-sounding soul record of no great significance. When he dropped the needle on to the disc on his battery-operated portable record player, his heart skipped a beat. โœŠ (Ian was use to bring his plastic player always with him) โ€œThat was the moment, I didnโ€™t expect it to have THE Marvin Gaye type sound that I would love. I heard JJโ€™s voice and I just melted. I must have played it fifty times in a row. From then on, I started collecting records for realโ€ โœŠโœŠโœŠkeep the faith! Mr Loriz.......Great story and one that resonates very deeply with me. It was virtually the exact same 'epiphany' that my brother and I also experienced back in the late '60s. Up until then we had been collecting Soul music on labels like Motown, Atlantic, Polydor, Stax etc. It was great music but it was essentially Black pop - and everyone was listening to it.
Then suddenly, our musical tastes veered off in a whole new direction thanks to our best [school] friend's elder brother. You see, he was an erstwhile Mod and had a record collection to die for. Every afternoon after school my brother and I would excitedly go to our best mate's house and listen to all these incredible sounds that we had never heard or seen before.
They were mostly American imports on exotic sounding record labels like Giant, Money, Sound Stage 7, Lizard, St Lawrence, Loma and Okeh. But there was one label that our mate's brother seemed to have quite a few records on - Ric-Tic. And of all the records on this pillar-box red label, one stood out above all others - JJ Barnes' 'Please Let Me In'.
As luck would have it, our mate's brother was getting married and he needed money to put down a deposit on a house. So he reluctantly decided to sell his record collection - and as he knew we absolutely cherished all these wonderful records he had, he let us buy them all.
It was the beginning of a journey that has never really ended and to this very day there is nothing that comes close to it. Some people call it Northern Soul - and that's ok. We only knew it as 'Uptempo' or 'Rare' Soul back then.
Over the years, we have managed to buy some of the best and rarest of records - and many of the 'biggest' sounds on the scene. But this one sublime record is what really started it all for us too.
