His music is often blues influenced. Lyrical themes vary from childhood memories (like "Verinen Mies" or "Paskahousua") to varyingly obscure tales of everyday life. "Tulpaani ja Sadepisara", for example, tells a tale of a tulip on the verge of dying of thirst. Karjalainen has created a sort of alter ego which he refers to as "Laulumies", the singer.
His latest album Lännen-Jukka features himself alone with a banjo and sometimes a guitar, singing with a rough blues voice. The songs are mostly traditional (Finnish-)American folk songs.

Mä olen kieltään lipova liskomies
Mä olen Uuden-Englannin nahkamies
Aina ilosta syntyvä uudestaan
Sä tunsit mut aiemmin Markkuna
Sitä poikaa ei enää olekaan
Sä revit lehden sun muistokirjasta
Mennyt mies
On historiaa
Mennyt mies
On historiaa
Sokerijuurikas ei mua kiinnosta
En aio mennä syksyllä opistoon
En enää vuosiin oo käynyt metsällä
Mä en tahdo tarttua aseeseen
Mul on syntya ja skitta ja vahvatti
Pitsiverhoissa ruusukuvio
Mul on huoneessa mennyt maailma
Mul on loistava tulevaisuus
Mennyt mies
On historiaa
Mennyt mies
On historiaa
Isäni veisteli puisia ukkoja
Puisen naisen mä löysin pellosta
Keihäänkärjenkin löysin ja hävitin
Omat ukkoni veistän vinyyliin
Sitten kerran kun avaat radion
Kuulet kumman tuttua, kaunista
Jonka luulet, oot kerran tuntenut
Jonka luulit, oot voinut unohtaa
Mennyt mies
On historiaa
Mennyt mies
On historiaa
Mä olen mystinen hopeinen discomies
Mä olen kieltään lipova liskomies
Mä olen Uuden-Englannin nahkamies
Aina ilosta syntyvä uudestaan
The lyrics of J. Karjalainen's song Mennyt Mies touch upon themes of identity and change. The singer describes himself as a "mystical silver disco guy" and a "tongue-licking lizard man", indicating his idiosyncratic persona. He also mentions his past self, "Markkuna", whom he insists is no longer present, and seems to revel in the idea of being reborn from joy. The phrase "mennyt mies", which means "gone man" or "past man" in Finnish, is repeated throughout the song, emphasizing the idea that the singer has shed his former self and moved on to something new.
The singer contrasts his current interests and lifestyle with those of his past self. He expresses disinterest in sugar beets and going to school, and reveals that he hasn't gone hunting in years and has no desire to pick up a weapon. Instead, he boasts about his possessions, including his "syntya" (a type of synthesizer) and his "vahvatti" (amplifier), as well as his rose-patterned lace curtains and vinyl figures he has carved. He paints a picture of his room as a shrine to a bygone era, yet promises a bright future ahead.
The song's chorus highlights the idea that the past is history, and suggests that the singer has moved beyond it. The repetition of "mennyt mies" serves as a reminder that each of us carries the weight of our past selves, but it's up to us to break free of those patterns and start anew.

Saw him in concert in Kaivopuisto Park in downtown Helsinki in 1981 just after he had released his first album and I fell in love with his music. We even shared bus rides from time to time heading east from Helsinki to Soukka but I was always too shy to say hello and how much I loved his music. As an American learning Finnish his songs helped quite a lot. After moving back to the states I lost track of him until the internet brought us together again. Jukka, kittos paljon!
