Sound
JAMES (live) Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Ape your father's sins, your mother's mood swings
To perfection
Fall into a spin, shed another skin
Strip away all your protection

Laugh at the wonder of it all
Laugh so loud you break the fall
And you see the gathering clouds
Cry at the sadness of the world
Cry so long you break its cold
And you hear the gathering sounds

Do everything you fear
In this there's power
Fear is not to be afraid of

Laugh at the wonder of it all
Laugh so loud you break your fall
And you hear the gathering sounds

Come, dip on in
Leave your bones, leave your skin

Leave your past, leave your craft
Leave your suffering heart

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to JAMES (live)'s song Sound convey a message of letting go and embracing the unknown. The opening lines are an invitation to mirror the traits of one's parents, to imitate their flaws, and to perfect them. The following lines use striking imagery of shedding layers, removing all forms of protection, to signify the importance of stripping oneself of all preconceptions and expectations. These lines suggest that embracing change, especially the unpredictable, can be an empowering experience.

The chorus calls for unabashed laughter, the kind that can "break the fall" - a metaphor for a release from the seriousness of life. The gathering clouds and sounds represent the doom and gloom of the world. Nevertheless, the song encourages a paradoxical blend of crying and laughter. The song argues that in embracing what we fear, we can find true strength, for fear itself is not something to be afraid of.

The final lines about leaving one's bones, skin, past, craft, and suffering heart are a final invitation to embrace change fully. By leaving behind everything that defines us, we become reborn in the unknown, with infinite possibilities.

Tim Booth's/James music has been there through the worst and the best moments of my life. After my sister's murder, then 4 years later my father's suicide, and 7 years after that my nephew's drowning, they have always been a support system for me to walk me through. Without James I honestly don't know if I would have made it out alive. "He that saves one life saves the world entirely".

Some songs never age. This takes me back when I was a young girl. Always treasure memories. Thanks James

Took my first full E to this song, 25 year's ago tonight. I cry at the beauty it brings even now.
