I've got the D1 And I am looking into a sennheiser microphone, it's the only way to really capture that. Almost all my videos pretty much I just hit a note and that's it, I don't have to slide into it, but to actually develop a singing voice like this is going to take several more years

JD will always be the Bass!!! JD`s voice had charisma, not like other immitations. And you can still hear his notes without a subwoofer!

I wonder if he used Sennheiser. It's a great cardioid mic that picks up LOW Bass. I tested one out from my voice in Guitar Center and it is amazing! I could hear every little part of my voice whereas with other microphones, it just fell very flat and lifeless

Thank you for posting this song....I'd sure love it if his American Trilogy was available again... all my cassettes are so worn out....they have been played thousands of times ....doing what JD did before his legendary singing career...millions of miles JD, Jesus... and me... The GREATEST MOMENT in my entire life was when I called a number to request a cassette, to my surprise it was HIS daughter Shirley who answered the phone...and this lifetime hero took time to chat with ME! THANK YOU! JD

@TheBim1987 I agree! Many of us low basses use vocal fry to achieve such notes. its an art i have mastered with time but JD had no need or use for it! He could sing WAY DOWN THERE without it. Always amazed me how he could sing so low naturally! Never be another like him that's for sure.

Hey guys just so you all know, Paul David....that's my dad. And he did cut old man river. When I was 16 my great uncle died and that was his favorite song. He'd always wanted my dad to cut it but he never did. So when he died one morning after I headed off to school, dad cut it and it was played at the funeral. You may all say that J.D., Tim, George and those guys are the best, and that's great as everyone is entitled to their own opinion. But the musicality in which my father performed this song would blow you all away. I believe. You see my dad is a singer. He just happens to be able to sing very low. I sure would love for everyone to be able to hear all of the things that I have on my ipod of him so people wouldn't constantly bash him all over YouTube.

No offense but if you're really who you say then get some thicker skin. PD has a decent voice but he certainly isn't JD Sumner. Public perception of any performer is largely due to their own hand. You're aware of PD walking out of a National Quartet Convention because he couldn't use his own special equipment in a competition? Look at the current record claimer, his arrogance and exaggerated claims (yes) have played a big role in how the public sees him.

@CuriosityRoads A friend of mine made me a copy of one of JD's 80s solo albums many years ago and I believe it is called American Trilogy and from I have been tolled those albums were only soled at concerts in the 80s.

@thebassmanadam Well you can he's very careful in his articulation of the notes. He starts really quiet and seeps in the volume. That in itself is quite a feat as most people lose any kind of dynamic control. The trick is to have your throat really clear and kinda dry so you don't need to contort your vocal cords to get the friction you need to move them. Then they move nice and easy and you sound like thunder. The contortion creates the croaky, bright, tone that most refer to as voice fry.

WOW..... This can't be explained any other way... Jd was the lowest of lows... And that note at 0:49 was so low but thats not what i got me.. You see it resonanted, my subs shook the desktop.. Some bass singers can hit that note.. But I'd like to see Storms or Kennamer do that

if anybody thinks JD sumner Frys wants F....g themselves. That's "frying" for the moderator. He has the most natural bass voice of any gospel bass. Not the most pretty, tone not brilliant. But he could do this every day and every night and that is what separates him from the other Gospel (heavily microphoned) basses. I love Riley (rainbow of love) Younce pretty much everything. Storms (not a lot) But JD could do it all day and the other cleary can't.

I notice a lot of people tend to shout "vocal fry" when they hear really low notes. Just to give specific examples of fry and full voice from this video. One good example of vocal fry here is at 2:04. The note at 3:08 is a good example of a very low note in chest voice. The way to tell is by the tone quality. If it sounds like a burp with no tone, it's most likely fry. If it sounds clean (or even somewhat like a burp) with good tone, it's full voice.

it is entirely vocal fry, that's for sure. Actually J.D. Sumner was definitely a baritone without any doubt; listen how his normal singing voice is in other songs. From 2.25 his normal voice can be heard and it's definitely a normal baritone. Listen to real basses and you will hear that their timbre differs enormously from J.D. Sumner.

JD Sumner was definitely a real, natural bass. Although he sometimes sings with subharmonics, his chest register goes down to about a contra G (G1). His timbre is very distinct because of his natural gravel, but he's not a baritone.

Flyingferrets5 J.D never used subharmonics. His G0 was a chest note. He just had enormous vocal chords. Check out Dan Britton, he also had a guiness record for the lowest note.
