Though his music is primarily reggaeton, J Balvin has experimented with a variety of musical genres in his work, including electronica, house music, trap, and R&B. He has collaborated with artists such as Pharrell Williams, Major Lazer, and Sean Paul. Despite working with many English-speaking artists, J Balvin continues to sing almost exclusively in Spanish, and hopes to introduce Spanish-language music to a global audience. He is also noted for his eclectic and colorful fashion sense.
Balvin's breakthrough came in 2014 with the single "6 AM" featuring Puerto Rican singer Farruko which peaked at. The song, along with the single "Ay Vamos", bolstered sales of his debut album La Familia. In 2016, he released Energia, which included the hit singles "Ginza", "Bobo", "Safari", and "Sigo Extranandote". In June 2017, J Balvin released the single "Mi Gente" with Willy William, which achieved international success and later reached one billion views on YouTube. This preceded the release of his fifth full-length album, titled Vibras, the concept for which was developed from the moment "Mi Gente" started "connecting with audiences around the world," presented as a fusion of reggaeton with different worldwide styles and rhythms. It received favorable reviews from critics and audiences alike, with Juana Giaimo of The Guardian praising the sound of the reggaeton music on the album by calling it "smooth" and "sensual", and dubbing it the "perfect party playlist, [which] confirms that the noisy style of early reggaeton hits such as Daddy Yankee's 'Gasolina' is slowly being left behind."
He has also collaborated with Cardi B and Bad Bunny on the US Billboard Hot 100 number-one single "I Like It".

Nos fuimos de roce
Hoy voy a lo loco
Ustedes me conocen (me conocen)
(wu)
No me complico (ah)
Tomando vino y algunos fumando Mari
La policía está molesta porque
Ya se puso buena la fiesta pero
Estamos legal
Y yo no me complico
(y ella)
No me complico, (y ella)
A mí me gusta pasarla rico (y ella)
Y yo no me complico
No me complico
A mí me gusta pasarla rico
Hey, hey, umm
(Plop, plob)
Hey, hey, (wuh)
Hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, mmm, mmm (blap, blap)
Que siga la fiesta
No vamos a parar
Hoy me tocó seguir
La gente pide más
Me invitan por aquí
Me invitan por allá, (ya tú chabe)
Y vamo' a seguir
¿Pa qué me invitan? (tú sabe)
Vamo' a seguir
¿Pa qué me invitan?
Y yo no me complico
No me complico
A mí me gusta pasarla rico
Y yo no me complico
No me complico
A mí me gusta pasarla rico (wuh)
Yaw, yaw, yaw, yaw
Hey, hey, hey
No me complico, (nah)
Yo no me complico (nah)
Yo no me complico (nah)
In his song "Amarillo," J Balvin talks about his love of partying and living life without worrying about anything else. The opening lines establish that the party is just getting started, despite the late hour. He references Tego Calderón, a Puerto Rican rapper who is known for his reggaeton music, and Balvin characterizes himself as someone who is known by everyone around him. Balvin wants to "pass it rich," or have a good time, without worrying about any complications. He acknowledges that the police may show up to shut down the party, but he is not concerned because he isn't doing anything illegal.
Throughout the rest of the song, Balvin continues to express his love of partying and being invited to various events. He mentions being at a party that is still going strong and will continue until the sun comes up. He also talks about being around people who are smoking marijuana and drinking wine. Balvin emphasizes his carefree attitude, stating that he isn't even bothering to order the drinks that keep showing up. The title "Amarillo" (yellow in English) is not directly referenced in the lyrics, but it is believed that it is a reference to Balvin's preference for wearing yellow clothing.
Overall, "Amarillo" is a fun, upbeat song about enjoying life without complications. Balvin conveys the message that he loves to party and will continue to do so, regardless of what others think or try to stop him.
