Anti-American Graffiti
J Dilla Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

"My family tree, is my history" {*echoes*}

Yeah baby (yeah)
I baby, I baby you bet your life baby
That's right I'd die here
With the world's most populous drinking areas, you understand?
This is how I'd die, yeah
Everything is back, and they'd use what
And everybody here's waiting for the million dollar jackpot
Number to come up man, and you know
It's a lot of shit, but that's just what the doctor said

Too much too soon! Hell yeah

Straight sound like the end of the world or armageddeon man
They need to find another way for people I talk to
Oughta know, who is gon' take the responsibility nigga

Say it

Too much too soon! Hell yeah

Say it

Bombs droppin

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to J Dilla's song "Anti-American Graffiti" evokes a sense of personal history and cultural identity. The lines, "My family tree, is my history," allude to the idea that one's genealogy and heritage are integral components of personal history, and that they inform one's present day identity. This theme is further perpetuated in the following lines, "Yeah baby, I baby, I baby you bet your life baby, That's right I'd die here," which hint at the idea that one's roots and cultural affinities are so fundamental to one's sense of self that they are worth dying for.

The song continues with the predominant theme of cultural alienation and criticism of American society. The lines, "Too much too soon! Hell yeah, Straight sound like the end of the world or armageddeon man, They need to find another way for people I talk to," suggest that American society is on a collision course with disaster due to its reckless and unsustainable values. This sentiment is further reiterated in the line, "Bombs droppin'," which evokes images of violence, destruction, and political turmoil.

"That's right I die here" Damn. I keep catching all the sampled dialogue in Donuts the more I listen to it and realize a lot of it was Dilla grappling with his incoming death. Sad and poignant. But still a beautiful project.

The composition of this track is incredible. It totally transcends normal beat-making. Jay Dee was a genius.

If "Don't Cry" is the most emotional track, then this the overall best mixed track.
That guitar goes so fantastically well with the spoken sample.
