Runnin'
J Dilla Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

[Chorus: x4]
Can't keep runnin' away

[Fat Lip]
I must admit on some occasions I went out like a punk
And a chump or a sucker or something to that effect
Respect I used to never get when all I got was upset
When niggas use to be like 'What's up fool!' and tried
To seat a nigga like the Lip for no reason at all I can
Recall crip niggas throwin' c in my face down the hall
I'm kickin' it in the back of the school eatin' chicken at
Three, wonderin' why is everybody always pickin' on me
I tried to talk and tell tham chill I did nothing to deserve
This But when it didn't work I wasn't scared just real
Nervous and unprepared to deal with scrappin' no doubt
Cause my pappy never told me how to knock a nigga out
But now in 95 I must survive as a man on my own Fuck
Around with Fatlip yes ya get blown I'm not trying to show
No macho is shown but when it's on, if it's on, then it's on!

[Chorus: x4]

[Slim Kid Tre]
There comes a time in every mans life when he's gotta
Handle up on his own Can't depend on friends to
Help you in a squeeze, please they got problems of their
Own Down for the count on seven chickens shits don't
Get to heaven til they faced these fears in these fear
Zones Used to get jacked back in high school I played
It cool just so some real shit won't get full blown Being
Where I'm from they let the smoke come quicker than an
Evil red-neck could lynch a helpless colored figure And
As a victim I invented low-key til the keyhole itself got
Lower than me So I stood up and let my free form form
Free. Said I'm gonna get some before they knockin' out me.
I don't sweat it I let the bullshit blow in the breeze
In other words just freeze

[Chorus: x4]

[Knumbskull #1]
It's 1995 now that I'm older stress weighs on my shoulders
Heavy as boulders but I told ya
Till the day that I die I still will be a soldier and that's all I told
Ya and that's all I showed ya
And all this calamity is rippin' my sanity
Can it be I'm a celebrity
Whose on the brink of insanity
Now don't be wishin's of switchin' any positions with me
Cause when you in my position, it ain't never easy
To do any type of maintaining cause all this gaming and famin' from
Entertainin' is hella straining to the brain and
But I can't keep running I just gotta keep keen and cunnin'

[Repeat: x13]
Cant keep runnin' away

Overall Meaning

The song "Runnin'" by J Dilla (aka Jay Dee) is a high-energy track that speaks to the challenges and struggles faced by individuals who feel like they are constantly being pushed around and stepped on by others. The chorus repeats the phrase "Can't keep runnin' away" multiple times, emphasizing the need to stand up and take control of one's life.

The lyrics in the first verse, delivered by Fat Lip, describe some of the experiences he faced growing up, including being picked on and bullied by other kids. Despite feeling nervous and unprepared to fight back, he ultimately recognizes the need to stand up for himself and not back down from any confrontation. Slim Kid Tre's verse continues this theme, highlighting the importance of taking responsibility for one's own life and not relying on others to come to the rescue.

Knumbskull #1's verse deals more with the pressures and stresses of adulthood, particularly in the entertainment industry where artists are expected to constantly maintain their fame and image. Despite the challenges, he remains determined to keep pushing forward and not give up.

SCOPE ONTHEMIC

Amaneceres helados

Soy otro elegido soy Longbottom Neville
Sonido causa alboroto poco Heavy

Homies rolling wiros anchos
Respiro y deliro mientras canto

Evolucióno y colisiono a Darwin

Extraño a mi abuelo

Soy cholo soy serrano

Beats like this don’t just happen. J Dilla was undoubtedly a jazz funk and soul hopeless rainman and exhaustively-versed aficionado...

My own experience with the Jazz-Hip Hop crossover...

I somehow discovered Jazz first before Hip Hop in 4th grade after deciding that the sax playing muppet on the Muppet Show (Zoots?) was the coolest of all muppets and started listening to Miles Davis before my mom gave me a CD of John Coltrane “Stardust Sessions” and it was over—
Jazz was my first love and I vowed to learn to play saxophone. This conviction was only strengthened and enchanted when I discovered in my parents vinyl collection “Jazz Samba” with Stan Getz and Charlie Byrd!
It was jazz fusion! Samba!

Years pass and I’m in college, the host of a 4 hour Jazz radio show every Monday night (also a tenor saxophonist by this time 😉)...

It was during one of my shows where I was featuring an entire album at the 11 ‘o’ clock hour, spinning the sequel to Jazz Samba, the blue album “Encore!” with Getz and Luiz Bonfa (as mentioned in the comments)...

When I heard that ineffable, fleeting but unmistakable stroke of guitar strums I was nonplussed!
I recognized it immediately but what blew me away was how unlikely it was that Dilla plucked those buried bars from the song and the sax at the end and somehow heard the potential and KNEW to loop it and mesh everything together.

This is the phenomenon of true hip hop sampling archaeology. This is the genius of Dilla. He had an ear like no other for samples.
Just hearing the potential of a sample and pulling it off the vinyl is a talent in itself and producers like Dilla, Pete Rock, Mumbles, Premiere... are the savant garde!

This song is a specific example of such gifted prowess.

Keep your ears wide open!

Fly Tendencies

I keep my head high
Ghetto falls beneath my feet
The captivated masses straight relaxing when I speak

Straight from J steez
you can't tell from Acapulco's
A diamond in the rough
all these other rappers fools gold

Your mind's in love with this
my rhymes are enticing
These women stay enticed when I step up to the mic
and
provided these old forbidden flows from the beast coast
this MC murders the beats most

listen

I'm cut from different cloth
these youngins smoked and fucked with bitches
I stayed up with my books
Then helped my moms up in the kitchen
Those other niggas grew inhibitions throughout the years
I grow intuition
mix it with verses in my lyrics

a little scrawny
but ornery
don't you ask for this
I keep the peace
but if you cross me, imma pass a fist

Refine my rhyming skills
I try my best
My rap's electric relaxation
No tribe called quest
When I write my rhymes I deviate from the scripture
The soul of Basquiat
My words will paint a mental picture

Weeeee

It's 1995
And now that I'm older, stress weighs on my shoulders
Heavy as boulders, but I told y'all
Until the day that I die I still
Will be a soldier and that's all I told ya
And that's all I showed ya
And all this calamity is rippin' my sanity
Can it be that
I'm a celebrity
Who's on the brink of insanity?
Now don't be wishin' of switchin' any positions with me
Cause when you in my position, it ain't never easy
To do any type of maintainin'
Cause all this gamin' and famin' from entertainin'
Is hella strainin' to the brain and
But I can't keep runnin' I just gotta keep keen and cunnin'

LEGENDARY VERSE

Artesian

Runnin ain't somethin you wanna run into
When Yo ass is strapped to the back of the life ya give in to
Ya gotta
Switch on the respirator
Separate the wheat from the chaff
Step on the accelerator
Away from the haters that math
The experience away
Delirious they serious about takin you down
Ain't nobody else got the skeleton keys to you in this town
I hold dey gaze take a logical ratchet to they head
Verbalize the empty lies they thought they left behind in the red
Zone
Out the way we move it's all mapped out in the fast lane
But we too busy countin taxes to remember the last rain
