SEE YOU AT THE MOVIES
J Mascis Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I kiss the freedom that you made
Still in shock and so it fades
Can't let go, so it just stays
Dreamin' long out in a way
Far away from where I sit
Gotta one-up in a bit
Tried escaping with the breeze
She sells it all to friends in need

You're nowhere to be found
Can't quite get to the sound
The talk is not the town

Not sure where to get to
Is it in the cards?
Finding you is easy
But finding me is hard
And finding you is easy
I'll just try to stall
I don't peak too early
I don't peak at all

Pieces of the last time
Pieces reachin' long
I don't get the subjects
Wasn't raised that strong
Fire kept it goin'
Fire me instead
I'll see you at the movies
The movies in my head

I kiss the freedom that you made

Still in shock or so you say
Can't let go, so it just stays

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to J Mascis's song "See You At The Movies" seem to evoke a sense of longing and nostalgia, as well as a contemplation on the complexities of relationships. The opening lines, "I kiss the freedom that you made, Still in shock and so it fades," can be interpreted as a bittersweet acknowledgment of the influence and impact someone had on the singer's life. They are grateful for the freedom they experienced through this person, but also feel a sense of loss as that influence begins to fade.

The lyrics continue to delve into a sense of longing and escape, with lines like "Tried escaping with the breeze, She sells it all to friends in need." Here, the singer is searching for a way to escape their current reality and find solace or freedom elsewhere. The phrase "She sells it all to friends in need" suggests that this desire for escape is not unique to the singer but is shared by others, perhaps implying a collective yearning for something beyond their current circumstances.

The chorus seems to express a struggle to find oneself within the context of a relationship. The lines "Finding you is easy, But finding me is hard" imply that while the singer is able to locate or understand the other person, they struggle with their own identity and self-discovery. There is a hesitation, a desire to not rush the process, as expressed in the line "I don't peak too early, I don't peak at all."

The last verse brings a sense of confusion and uncertainty, with the lines "Pieces of the last time, Pieces reachin' long, I don't get the subjects, Wasn't raised that strong." It seems that the memories of the past relationship or experience are fragmented and not fully understood. The singer feels a disconnect, as if they were not equipped to fully comprehend or handle the complexities of the situation. The phrase "Fire me instead, I'll see you at the movies, The movies in my head" suggests a resignation, a decision to detach and find solace in the realm of imagination, where they can create their own narratives and outcomes.

Overall, "See You At The Movies" explores themes of longing, escape, and the challenges of self-discovery within the context of a relationship or past experience. It showcases J Mascis's knack for introspective and thought-provoking lyrics.

Thank you so much for this! 💗 my dad met J. J remembered my dad’s name when he saw him at a concert. I was raised on Dinasour Jr. This song found me when I was practicing the guitar my dad bought me. He passed a year ago. He was my favorite person. I felt him with me when I heard this song infact I think he wanted me to find it… to tell me I need to stop looking for him and start looking for me. 😭 So thank you!!! 🙏🏻
