If I Had Eyes
Jack Johnson(잭 존슨) Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
I would have told you that
You looked good
As I walked away
And if you could've tried to trust the hand that failed
You would've never been hungry
But you never really be
The more of this or less of this or is there any difference
Or are we just holding onto the things we don't have anymore
Sometimes time doesn't heal
No not at all
Just stand still
While we fall
In or out of love again I doubt I'm gonna win you back
When you got eyes like that
It won't let me in
Always looking out
Lot of people spend their time just floating
We were victims together but lonely
You got hungry eyes that just can't look forward
Can't give them enough but we just can't start over
Building with bent nails we're
Falling but holding, I don't wanna take up anymore of your time
Time time time
Sometimes time doesn't heal
No not all
Just stand still
While we fall
In or out of love again I doubt I'm gonna win you back
When you got eyes like that
It won't let me in
Always looking out
Always lookin'
Always lookin'
Always lookin'
Always looking out
The lyrics of Jack Johnson's song "If I Had Eyes" are about longing to go back to a lost love, but recognizing that things are over and that the other person is not looking back. The lyrics start with an interesting image of having eyes in the back of one's head, which is a metaphor for not being able to see the future or the past, and not being able to see the love that is right behind one's back until it has passed.
The second verse refers to a failed attempt at trust, and how this trust could have led to a reconciliation. However, the singer recognizes that things are over and that the other person is still hungry for something else. Then, Jack Johnson uses a metaphor of falling and standing still to describe the feeling of being stuck in a place where one cannot move forward, but cannot go back either. The lines "In or out of love again I doubt I'm gonna win you back / When you got eyes like that / It won't let me in / Always looking out" convey the idea that the other person is not interested in reconciling, and that they are always looking for something else, looking forward to the future and not back to the past.
Overall, "If I Had Eyes" is a melancholic song that expresses the pain of longing for something that is lost, but also the recognition that sometimes things are just over and that one has to move on.

We were victims together but lonely

Jack Johnson is the epitome of relaxation. I work hard all day long and get stressed a lot at work but I know when I get home that Jack will always be there waiting to take me to a place far away from here.
