Sitting Waiting Wishing
Jack Johnson Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Well I was sitting, waiting, wishing
You believed in superstitions
Then maybe you'd see the signs

Lord knows that this world is cruel
And I ain't the Lord no I'm just a fool
And a loving somebody don't make them love you
Must I always be waiting, waiting on you?
Must I always be playing, playing your fool?

I sang your songs, I danced your dance
I gave your friends all a chance
Putting up with them wasn't worth never having you

Aw, maybe you've been through this before
But it's my first time so please ignore
The next few lines 'cause they're directed at you

I can't always be waiting, waiting on you
I can't always be playing, playing your fool

I keep playing your part
But it's not my scene
Want this plot to twist
I've had enough mystery

Keep building it up
But then you're shooting me down
But I'm already down
Just wait a minute

Just sitting, waiting
Just wait a minute
Just sitting, waiting

Well if I was in your position
I'd put down all my ammunition
I'd wonder why it had taken me so long

But Lord knows that I'm not you
And if I was I wouldn't be so cruel
'Cause waiting on love ain't so easy to do

Must I always be waiting, waiting on you?
Must I always be playing, playing your fool?

No I can't always be waiting, waiting on you
I can't always be playing, playing your fool, fool

Overall Meaning

The song "Sitting, Waiting, Wishing" by Jack Johnson is an expression of a man who is deeply in love with someone who doesn't reciprocate his feelings. The man is sitting and waiting, wishing that his lover would believe in superstitions, so they would see the signs of love everywhere. However, the man acknowledges that this world is cruel and that he is just a fool. Loving someone doesn't always make them love you, and he is playing the fool by waiting for something that may never come.

The chorus repeats the central question in the song, "Must I always be waiting, waiting on you?" The man questions if he must always play the fool by waiting on someone who may never love him back. He has gone the extra mile; he sang her songs, danced her dance, and gave her friends a chance, but it wasn't worth never having her. He has had enough of the mystery and wants the plot to twist. He is tired of searching for love where it doesn't exist.

Johnson also provides a hypothetical viewpoint in this song, speaking from the possible perspective of the person who the man is addressing. The perspective suggests that if he was in her position, he would wonder why it has taken him so long to realize the man's love, but he affirms that waiting on love is not an easy thing to do. The second-last chorus then concludes with the man asserting that he can't always be waiting, he can't always be playing her fool.

This song is really hitting a deep nerve for me. It’s kinda scary to find a song that perfectly captures word for word how I’m feeling right now

@skaterdude14b

Back when then they had no PR team? Him and K Slater are besties

@nathanieldotter3717

Yep this what music does, it has a song for every feeling, because believe that if the person singing had that feeling once that there is a good chance that others have had that feeling, so I'm with ya. Just remember this song won't always pertain to you and your current situation.

@richarddutton1981
