The News
Jack Johnson Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I got myself a new axe
For chopping all this wood that's
Goin' in that fire
It's gonna keep us warm tonight
Tonight
Tonight

It's cold out that window
There's cards on this table
The kids are making magic and
Only thing that matters tonight
Is tonight
Is tonight

And all our loved ones all around us
All our loved ones watching down on us
On us

It's warm in that window
I'm outside in the morning glow
And just before the sunrise
Morning bird sings a song
Just for the light
For the light
For the light
For the light
For the light
For the light

And all our loved ones all around us

All our loved ones watching down on us
On us

Overall Meaning

In Jack Johnson's song The News, he tells the story of being in the midst of a cold winter evening, with the intention of staying warm through the night. The first verse speaks of a new axe that he has acquired specifically to chop wood to keep the fire going. The fire is a crucial element in ensuring they stay warm through the night. Johnson paints a picture of the cold winter night outside while inside, the family is playing cards, and the children are creating magic. He is focused on the present, and the only thing that matters to him is tonight.

The second verse takes us to the morning after. Johnson is outside in the morning glow, with the warmth coming from the window, and just before the sun rises, he hears the morning bird singing a song just for the light. Johnson turns his gaze to the sky, where he knows that all his loved ones surround him whom he feels are watching over him.

The concept of having all our loved ones surrounding us and watching over us is both comforting and reassuring. The song reminds us of the importance of family, warmth, taking care of each other, and enjoying the present moments.

Playing this song to the kids right now. Glad to find it. One of the under appreciated songs of Jack Johnson IMO.

Very truly one that goes unnoticed.

Jack, this is a great emotional analysis of the "Bad News Overload" problem.

Our Diminishing Capacity to Care...
The advent of mass electronic media in the last century has desensitized the average person’s capacity for sympathy, empathy, and compassionate reaction to people in need.  There is simply too much calamity around us; this bad news overload has simply paralyzed our capacity to care the way we should, and generally speaking, we have become altogether emotionally constipated.  If someone asks my opinion of the latest world headline I often respond, “I didn’t hear of it, I don’t follow the news”; when asked incredulously “why?”, I reply, “because it is all bad”.  Save the small percentage of the population that are sociopaths, I believe that every person who walks God’s green earth wants to be a Good Samaritan for less fortunate folk in need, or other worthy causes.  For that matter, even a sociopath will reach out with the appearances of compassion, albeit for a different motive such as seeking the praises of others.

In simpler days when mass media was not available, the average person’s exposure to worthy causes was limited to those he or she might see first hand on the way to the water well or on a journey to visit distant family, or maybe third-hand through someone they trust. A worthy cause may have been a widow trying to carry groceries home in the rain or a man who had been thrown from a horse and laid bleeding and dying in the ditch. In these scenarios the choice faced by our hypothetical ancestor was simple.  (a) Do I help this person in need or; (b) do I ignore their plight, turn a blind eye and walk selfishly on my way?

In simpler days, I am guessing that (a) would have been the default decision for most. I am sure (a) wins out today also, but I do fear that “busyness” and “numbness” causes a higher propensity for (b).
