Wrong Turn
Jack Johnson Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Just long enough to be sure that you didn't make a wrong turn
And I wait long enough
Maybe an hour or two
Before I decide
It wasn't me it was you
Wasn't me it was you
And I would like you to know
This was only the worst hour of my day
The worst hour of my day
How long has it been on your mind?
Do you think about it when we lie?
I think it's a big mistake
'Cause I think that we could make it last
Even if it's just for awhile
Wait here for now
Just along enough to be
Sure that you really want to go through with this
'Cause I really wanna go through with this
And do you really wanna go through with this?
In Jack Johnson's song Wrong Turn, the singer is waiting for someone who is contemplating leaving them. The first few lines set the scene - the singer is waiting for awhile to ensure that the other person didn't make a wrong turn. Metaphorically, this means that the singer is giving the other person a chance to make sure that they're making the right decision. They wait for about an hour or two, and eventually come to the conclusion that it wasn't them - it was the other person who wants to leave.
The second verse sees the singer trying to reason with the other person, trying to understand why they want to leave. They ask whether the other person has been thinking about it for a long time, perhaps even lying in bed at night, wondering whether they should go through with it. The singer thinks it's a mistake, and believes that they could make their relationship work, even if it's just for a little while. The last few lines are filled with uncertainty - the singer is questioning whether the other person really wants to go through with leaving.
Overall, Wrong Turn is a song about uncertainty, doubt, and the fear of being left behind. The singer is desperately trying to save their relationship, but they know that their efforts might be in vain. The song captures the raw emotions of heartbreak and rejection, and it manages to do so with a sense of vulnerability and authenticity.
