Along with the likes of Lily Allen, Jamie T, Kate Nash, Adele, etc, he is often included in the "Estuary English" pack of UK musicians - the 2006/2007 UK trend of young musicians singing without consciously altering their spoken English accent. (Estuary English being the accent commonly found around the south east of England, most notably in London [and even more notably among the youth], considered a compromise between Cockney and RP)
At 17 he started the band Jack's Basement with his friend Felix White. The band split in two, one half going on to form The Maccabees, the other forming Jack Peñate's band, including Joel Porter (bass) and Alex Robins (drums). Having started a Classics degree at UCL he hooked up with London indie club and label, Young Turks and his studies were dropped in favour of a music career.
His eclectic mix of styles incorporates elements of his varied influences which range from rockabilly and folk to jazz and trip-hop. He lists Prince, Jeff Buckley, Shuggie Otis, Todd Rundgren, JJ Cale, Harry Nilsson and Herbie Hancock among his influences. Yet he delivers a genuine London voice and still manages to sound original.
His live performances are characterised by his much commented, "individualist" style of dancing where he plays guitar and dances simultaneously with a vigorous fluidity - he finds it hard to keep still.
In autumn 2006, Peñate signed to XL Recordings who delivered main-stream success with the release of his debut album Matinée. It was followed up in 2009 with Everything is New.
Tonight’s Today
Jack Peñate Lyrics

An in between stage
Cos I'm not awake
But walk in a state
Of ghostly charm
A deadly calm
And my filthy palms
Reach for the harms
Today's tonight tonight's today today's tonight (2x)
Tonight's today today's tonight tonight's today
Everyday everyday everyday
Tonight just became this morning
The sun's waves at the moon
The thought has just started dawning
That there's still so much more that I can do
I shuffle into the sunlight
A zombie roaming on the day
She look's at me and says "What a sight"
A passing woman says
Today's tonight tonight's today today's tonight (2x)
Tonight's today today's tonight tonight's today
Every nights the same
I'm ringing church bells ,church bells,
I'm ringing church bells
I'm ringing church bells ,church bells,
I'm ringing church bells
I'm ringing bells
Today's tonight tonight's today today's tonight (2x)
Tonight's today today's tonight tonight's today
Everyday everyday
In Jack Peñate’s song Tonight’s Today, the lyrics describe the feeling of being in a haze, in an “in between stage” of being awake and asleep while also in a “ghostly charm” and “deadly calm” state. The singer’s hands “reach for the harms,” conveying a sense of danger and recklessness. The repeated phrase “Today’s tonight, tonight’s today” adds to this sense of confusion and being lost in time.
As the night turns to morning, the singer reflects on all that they can still do and “shuffle[s] into the sunlight” as a “zombie roaming on the day.” A passerby comments on their appearance, further adding to the idea that the singer is lost and not quite sure of themselves. The repetition of the phrase “I’m ringing church bells” adds to the overall dreamlike nature of the song, creating a sense of ritual and repetition that enhances the singer’s feeling of being stuck in a cycle.
Overall, the lyrics of Tonight’s Today create a vivid picture of a person who is lost and in a haze, unsure of themselves and their place in the world. The repeated phrases and sense of repetition and ritual adds to this sense of being stuck in a cycle with no clear way out.
