Burning Bridges
Jack Scott Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Found some letters you wrote me this morning
They told of the love we once knew
Now they're gone I burned them to ashes
Don't want nothing to remind me of you

Burning bridges behind me
It's too late to turn back now
Burning bridges behind me
All I want is to forget you somehow

Sold the house we once planned together
Said goodbye to the folks we once knew
Then I moved to a far away city
Tried so hard to forget about you

Burning bridges behind me
It's too late to turn back now

Burning bridges behind me
All I want is to forget you somehow

Overall Meaning

In Jack Scott's song "Burning Bridges," the singer discovers letters he received from his former love and decides to burn them in order to move on from her. The lyrics describe how he has already sold the house they planned on living in together, said goodbye to mutual acquaintances, and moved to a new city in an attempt to forget about her. However, he realizes that he must burn every bridge connecting him to their past relationship in order to truly let go of his love for her. The chorus emphasizes this, as he sings about burning the bridges behind him and acknowledges that it is too late to turn back now.

The lyrics of this song convey the intense pain and difficulty of letting go of a past love. The singer is willing to get rid of everything that is connected to his former relationship in an effort to move on, yet he still struggles to forget about her completely. He also acknowledges that his actions cannot be undone - hence the refrain "it's too late to turn back now" - which may leave some listeners with a sense of sadness or regret.

I saw him last night (9/27/08) at the city festival in Warren, MI. After all these years he's still got it! He explained the history behind this song...when he performed it he had a strep throat and a 103 fever. He recorded it anyway and gave it his best shot. After he was feeling better he wanted to go back and re-record it, but they told him it was fine. He didn't agree, but it went on to become a big hit.

i was just entering my teens when he was popular.....sometimes, when longing to go back to those days, I will listen to his songs. With your backdround, you probably remember that this was a time
of great variety in pop music.....so very many great songs and singers came out of these day!
