Oh Klahoma
Jack Stauber Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

(Yeah, yeah, yeah)

Set the phases to rot
What has got you distraught?
It's negative attention at best
But call it nothing

Maybe it's something, a little bit, a little bit
Maybe it's something, do a little bit

It's all about ascension, I guess
Don't put me to rest

Go on and hand me your clothes (oh, here you go)
Take a picture or two (two or three?)
I can see you (oh)

Tears falling down at the party
Saddest little baby in the room
Fears, tell me fears, don't get me started
I get a little grey hair for every scare you share

Those aren't meant to bend
No, those aren't meant to bend
Those aren't meant to bend
No, those aren't meant to bend

I hear your eyes and I see those cries
I hear those eyes and I see those cries
I can't be the only one who hears you

Tears falling down at the party
Saddest little baby in the room
Fears, tell me fears, don't get me started
I get a little gray hair for every scare you share

Those aren't meant to bend
No, those aren't meant to bend
Those aren't mean to bend
No, those aren't meant to bend

Tears falling down at the party
Saddest little baby in my eye

Fears, tell me fears, don't get me started
I might die

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Jack Stauber's song Oh Klahoma can be interpreted in a number of ways, but one possible reading is that it explores the theme of depression and the struggles of dealing with negative emotions. The opening lines, "Set the phases to rot / What has got you distraught?" suggest a sense of hopelessness or decay, while the following lines, "It's negative attention at best / But call it nothing / Maybe it's something, a little bit, a little bit / Maybe it's something, do a little bit," seem to convey a sense of resignation or apathy in the face of these feelings. The repeated refrain of "Those aren't meant to bend / No, those aren't meant to bend" could be seen as a metaphor for the rigidity and inflexibility of one's emotions or mental state, while the final lines, "I might die," underscore the seriousness of the situation.

The rest of the lyrics continue to explore these themes, with the verses describing a social situation ("Go on and hand me your clothes / Take a picture or two") that contrasts sharply with the singer's inner turmoil ("Tears falling down at the party / Saddest little baby in the room / Fears, tell me fears, don't get me started / I get a little gray hair for every scare you share"). The repetition of the lines "I hear your eyes and I see those cries / I hear those eyes and I see those cries / I can't be the only one who hears you" suggests a desire for empathy and connection, while the repeated refrain reinforces the idea that these negative feelings are difficult to escape or overcome.

Here is my interpretation of the song. im not sure if its original but I came to this conclusion listening to this song a bunch.

I think people tend to try to think this is from the perspective of an adult with either problems with anxiety with things being more figurative. But I think this song is more literal than anything. I think this song has two perspectives, one from a baby (named Klahoma) on it's first birthday, and the other from Jack Stauber, or the onlooker. I think hes watching a baby and writes from the baby's perspective.

"what has got you distraught? Its negative attention, at best. But call it nothing" - The baby is crying and being fussy, maybe its not getting enough attention, probably nothing.

"its all about ascension, I guess. Don't put me to rest" -What baby hasn't cried to be picked up? Baby is just not in a good mood.

"go on and hand me your clothes, Take a picture or two" - Guess whos the birthday baby? Klahoma! nicely dressed and ready for pictures because what (good) parent isn't going to take photos of the first birthday?

I believe the chorus is pretty literal from Klahoma's perspective, something scared it because "those aren't mean't to bend" Maybe party streamers? straws? who knows? Most babies tend to have greyish hair if they are not naturally really dark/ Black.

I wonder if what Jack would think of my analysis, What do you think? do you have another Idea? It's a good song.

Jack, if you do somehow see this, please come to Idaho!
