Smooth
Jack Stauber Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Gold ran the autumn sky
And often we would fly
Above
Arms out on the freezing sun
Our jackets held us warm
As dancing leaves would form
Walls
We'd take each others hands and we would run

Goodbyes and see you soons
Most every afternoon
Made
The lonely nights a bit easier to take
You took a downward bend
Night swung you back again
Learn
It takes a lot to watch a person break

Those lakes of ours drying up
Even though we kept trying, trying
Smooth hands that I'd been stripped of
I knew the ground till I was flying, flying

Every inch that we grew
And everything that we'd do
Planted seeds
Throughout the weeds
And when It reached the sky
It was a mile high

And I'll always know
There's ground below

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Jack Stauber's song "Smooth" tell a story of a past relationship and the memories associated with it. The opening lines "Gold ran the autumn sky and often we would fly above" describe a beautiful scene where the singer and their partner would fly above the changing autumn leaves with their arms out and jackets keeping them warm. The image of dancing leaves forming walls emphasizes the feeling of being cocooned in their own little world together. The chorus then switches to the idea of goodbyes and see you later's being said frequently, which shows that the couple did not spend all of their time together but still cherished the moments they had.

The second verse mentions a downward bend and a swing back to the night, conveying the idea that the partner had moments of darkness and instability that impacted the relationship. "Learn it takes a lot to watch a person break" expresses the idea that watching someone you care about go through hard times is not easy. The third verse shifts to a sense of loss and longing as the couple's shared memories seem to be drying up even though they continue to try to make things work. The idea that the singer's smooth hands had been stripped of their security emphasizes the sense of vulnerability and loss. The final lines "and when it reached the sky it was a mile high and I'll always know there's ground below" suggest that even though the relationship is over, the memories and experiences they shared will always be a part of the singer's past.

the song title Buttercup I think conveys the same meaning as the song "Build me up buttercup" A guy trying to work things out in relationship but to find himself being let down and disappointed, but since he cannot leave her little poison, "fine, electrify mine, electrify my golden tooth (maybe stands for something precious, i.e.: self, life). his way of taking on the challenge.

When he said forget it I will do it sometime he meant that he will try to talk to a female he likes. When he said Im locked up on the button he was to scared to talk to her and he freezes and cant you do it sometime he meant instead of going up and talking to the girl he wants the girl to talk to him. and pushed it in to far he meant that he tried his hardest to talk to her.
