Love Is Blindness
Jack White Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Love is blindness
I don't wanna see
Won't you wrap the night
Around me?
Oh my heart
Love is blindness

In a parked car
In a crowded street
You see your love
Made complete
Thread is ripping
The knot is slipping
Love is blindness

Love is clockworks
And cold steel
Fingers too numb to feel
Squeeze the handle
Blow out the candle
Love is blindness

Love is blindness
I don't want to see
Won't you wrap the night
Around me?
Oh my love
Blindness

A little death
Without mourning
No call
And no warning
Baby, a dangerous idea
That almost makes sense

Love is drowning
In a deep well
All the secrets
And no one to tell
Take the money honey
Blindness

Love is blindness
I don't want to see
Won't you wrap the night
Around me?

Oh my love
Blindness

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Jack White's Love Is Blindness are an exploration of the darker side of love. The song speaks of a love that is all-encompassing and all-consuming, one that can make a person blind to the reality of the world around them. The opening lines "Love is blindness, I don't want to see" set the tone for the song, as if the singer is willingly allowing themselves to be blinded by their love.

The second and third verses are particularly powerful, painting vivid images of a tumultuous and dangerous love affair. The line "A little death without mourning, no call and no warning" suggests a love that is not only all-consuming but also potentially destructive. The use of the metaphor of drowning in a deep well also implies a sense of suffocation and helplessness.

Towards the end of the song, the line "take the money honey, blindness" changes the focus of the song slightly. Rather than being solely about love, the song becomes a commentary on the corrupting influence of money on relationships. This is a common theme in Jack White's music, and is particularly interesting in the context of this song.

Overall, Love Is Blindness is a powerful and evocative exploration of the complexities of love and the human condition.

I honestly don't understand why people criticize this soundtrack for "not being Gatsby enough". Did you think Luhrmann actually believed that rock, rap, and pop was played in the roaring 20's? Of course not! Therefore, it must serve an ulterior cinematic purpose. In this film, the music is used to connect to a younger audience. Would kids really feel like they're at a party when jazz is playing? Probably not. Would jazz evoke the same pained emotions as a lyric song would to kids? Once again, probably not. He wants the audience to feel the mood of the era, but the way he can convey those emotions is through familiarity of genre

Jack's translation of this song is spot on.  There's something so lovely about the way he suffers.

This version, I love it. Anger, frantic, searching, longing, desperate, slightly panicked, all overshadowed by pain- well delivered through his vocals and instrumental. That instrumental combination is steady, discordant, intentional, all over the place, but in sync. It just works

@theannoyingdahg

It's the perfect song to watch a crime scene happen to.
