Gleason could not read or write music in a conventional sense; he was said to have conceived melodies in his head and described them vocally to staff help. He did likewise with the well-remembered themes of both The Jackie Gleason Show ("Melancholy Serenade") and The Honeymooners ("You're My Greatest Love"). There has been some controversy over the years as to how much credit Gleason should have received for the finished products; it has been written that beyond the possible conceptualizing of many of the songs, Gleason had no direct involvement such as conducting in the making of these recordings. However, his main musical companion, cornetist and trumpeter Bobby Hackett once said: "Jackie knows a lot more about music than people give him credit for. I have seen him conduct a sixty-piece orchestra and detect one discordant note in the brass section. He would immediately stop the music and locate the wrong note. It always amazed the professional musicians how a guy who technically did not know one note from another could do that. And he was never wrong."

Dancing In The Dark
Jackie Gleason Lyrics

We're dancing in the dark and it soon ends
We're waltzing in the wonder of why we're here
Time hurries by, we're here and we're gone
Looking for the light of a new love
To brighten up the night, I have you love
And we can face the music together
What, though love is old
What, though song is old
Through them we can be young
Hear this heart of mine
Wailin' all the time
Dear one, tell me that we're one
Looking for the light of a new love
To brighten up the night, I have you love
And we can face the music together
Dancing in the dark, dancing in the dark
Dancing in the dark
The lyrics of "Dancing in the Dark" by Jackie Gleason are about two people who are dancing together in the dark, till the music ends. The song then moves on to a waltz, where both individuals wonder why they are here, and then realize that time is fleeting, and they are here one moment and gone the next. The lyrics connote the shortness of life and how we should make the most out of every moment of it, especially when we have our loved ones around. Jackie invokes the metaphor of dancing in the dark to signify how life is often like a dance, with us moving through the ups and downs, and the true value of it is in doing it together, with someone we love.
Additionally, the song speaks about finding a new light in love to brighten up the night. Jackie sings about how through love and music, we can be young, no matter what our age might be. It is a message of hope and celebration of love that resonates with the audience. Finally, Jackie implores his loved one to tell him that they are one, reaffirming the strength and beauty of a togetherness that is accentuated by the art of dance.
