Gleason could not read or write music in a conventional sense; he was said to have conceived melodies in his head and described them vocally to staff help. He did likewise with the well-remembered themes of both The Jackie Gleason Show ("Melancholy Serenade") and The Honeymooners ("You're My Greatest Love"). There has been some controversy over the years as to how much credit Gleason should have received for the finished products; it has been written that beyond the possible conceptualizing of many of the songs, Gleason had no direct involvement such as conducting in the making of these recordings. However, his main musical companion, cornetist and trumpeter Bobby Hackett once said: "Jackie knows a lot more about music than people give him credit for. I have seen him conduct a sixty-piece orchestra and detect one discordant note in the brass section. He would immediately stop the music and locate the wrong note. It always amazed the professional musicians how a guy who technically did not know one note from another could do that. And he was never wrong."

Love Letters in the Sand
Jackie Gleason Lyrics

We pass the time away
Writing love letters in the sand
How you laughed when I cried
Each time I saw the tide
Take our love letters from the sand
Would always be true
But somehow, that vow
Meant nothing to you
Now my poor heart just aches
With ev'ry wave that breaks
Over love letters in the sand
You made a vow that you
Would always be true
But somehow, that vow
Meant nothing to you
Now my poor heart just aches
With ev'ry wave that breaks
Over love letters in the sand
The song "Love Letters in the Sand" is an iconic classic that portrays a love story that has come to an end. The first verse of the song reflects on two individuals who are simply passing time away by writing "love letters in the sand" on a beautiful day. However, the second verse reveals that even though they had promised to be true to each other, that vow meant nothing to the person who broke the bond of love. In turn, the singer's heart is left shattered, with each wave that breaks over their love letters leaving a deep wound.
The songwriter of the song, Love Letters in the Sand, has masterfully created a sentimental masterpiece by weaving all the elements of love in the song. The song reminisces about the fond memories of two people who were once in love but have drifted apart. It tells the story of how they used to adore each other and would write love letters in the sand to express their feelings. But as time passed, one of them broke the promise and left the other heartbroken. The chorus reflects on the broken promises and the pain that follows when love is lost, using the image of the waves erasing the love letters in the sand as a powerful metaphor for the painful dissolution of love.
