Gleason could not read or write music in a conventional sense; he was said to have conceived melodies in his head and described them vocally to staff help. He did likewise with the well-remembered themes of both The Jackie Gleason Show ("Melancholy Serenade") and The Honeymooners ("You're My Greatest Love"). There has been some controversy over the years as to how much credit Gleason should have received for the finished products; it has been written that beyond the possible conceptualizing of many of the songs, Gleason had no direct involvement such as conducting in the making of these recordings. However, his main musical companion, cornetist and trumpeter Bobby Hackett once said: "Jackie knows a lot more about music than people give him credit for. I have seen him conduct a sixty-piece orchestra and detect one discordant note in the brass section. He would immediately stop the music and locate the wrong note. It always amazed the professional musicians how a guy who technically did not know one note from another could do that. And he was never wrong."

I'm as helpless as a kitten up a tree
Ah, I'm walkin' on a cloud
I can't understand, Lord
I'm misty holdin' your hand
Walk my way
And a thousand violins begin to play
That music I hear, Lord
I'm misty the moment you're near
You can say that you're leadin' me on
But it's just what I want you to do
Don't ya notice how hopelessly I'm lost
That's why I'm followin' you
Ooh, on my own
Should I wander through this wonderland alone, now
Never knowin' my right foot from my left
My hat from my glove, Lord
I'm misty, and too much in love
You can say that you're leadin' me on
But it's just what I want you to do
Don't ya notice how hopelessly I'm lost
That's why I'm followin' you
Ooh, on my own
Should I wander through this wonderland alone, now
Never knowin' my right foot from my left
My hat from my glove, Lord
I'm misty, and too much in love
(Misty) too much in love
(Misty) too much in love
(Misty)
(Misty) too much in love
The song is a love ballad that captures the feeling of being completely swept away by love. The singer describes himself as being helpless and lost when he is with his love interest, and even misty when he holds her hand. The imagery of being as helpless as a kitten up a tree and walking on a cloud highlights the intensity of his emotions. The music in the background serves to intensify the feeling of being lost in love, so much that a thousand violins begin to play.
The singer admits that his love interest might be leading him on, but he doesn't care. In fact, he wants her to lead him on because he is completely enamored by her. He is so lost in love that he can't tell his right foot from his left or his hat from his glove. The line "I'm misty, and too much in love" serves as a metaphor for the way that love can cloud your vision and your judgment.
Overall, the song is a beautiful expression of the feeling of being in love, and how it can so completely take over your entire being.
