Suffering Servant
Jackie Hill Perry Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Some people make me sad
They walk past me
With the rattle of buried bodies in their skeletons
And I am interested in why they haven't dropped them off yet
How they have gotten so comfortable
With the weight of death on their backs
And I wonder
If they have seen stars in their eyes
And moons beneath their smirk
But you can tell
That a mirror would only give them nightmares
And I wish I could wake them up
Untuck them from the comfort of lonely
And remind them that some dreams do come true
That a heart with chameleon like pain
Won't always be that color
Even though the past and present hunts them like a vidual eternity
Scaring the peace out of their faith
I place my two fingers next to their weary hands
And pinky promise them
That worship isn't too far from their reaches
Long as they are willing to try
Willing to crawl
A dying hope to the edge of the Throne of Mercy
Drag their weak hearts
Into the castle skies of David's God
And beg for Him to reign there when no umbrella
Just heaven disrupting the hell and prison beneath their ribcage
Filling your lungs with songs that have been too scared to fly
It is okay
Your earthly tears will be a means for praise
The day that you see your King's face
And He wipes them away

So smile
Because peace is coming

Overall Meaning

In "Suffering Servant," Jackie Hill Perry expresses her sorrow for people she sees who seem to be weighed down by their past sins and burdens. These people seem to be walking with the sound of buried bodies in their skeletons, and she wonders why they haven't let go of those burdens yet. She longs to wake them up from their comfort with loneliness and remind them that some dreams can come true. She promises them that if they are willing to try and crawl, worship is within their reach. If they can drag their weak hearts into the castle skies of David's God, they can beg for Him to reign there, disrupting the hell and prison of their pasts. Even though the past and present hunts them like a visual eternity and scares the peace out of their faith, they can be hopeful that peace is coming, and their tears will someday become a means for praise.

We must go and preach [repentance] And [remission of sins] Among All nations

and that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in his name among all nations, beginning at Jerusalem.

Luke 24:47 KJV

- Believe [for your faith will save you]

I said therefore unto you, that ye shall die in your sins: for [if ye believe not] that I am he, ye shall [die in your sins.]

John 8:24 KJV

- To give knowledge of salvation [by the remission of "our" sins]

To give knowledge of salvation unto his people by the [remission of their sins,]

Luke 1:77 KJV

- Receive [remission of sins] when initially believing

To him give all the prophets witness, that through his name [whosoever believeth] [in him] shall [receive] [remission of sins.]

Acts 10:43 KJV

- Convert sinner from his error of sin [convince someone of their error, like we were convinced]

Let him know, that he which converteth the sinner from the error of his way shall save a soul from death, and shall [hide a multitude of sins.]

James 5:20 KJV

- Confession of sin [confess your sins, everyday]

If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to [forgive us our sins,] and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

1 John 1:9 KJV

- [Remission of sins] from water baptism

Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be [baptized] every one of you in the [name of Jesus Christ] for the [remission of sins,] and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.

Acts 2:38 KJV

- Have charity [to have compassion]

And above all things have fervent charity among yourselves: for charity shall [cover the multitude of sins.]

1 Peter 4:8 KJV

- Love [to love thy neighbor as thyself]

Hatred stirreth up strifes: but [love covereth all sins.]
Proverbs 10:12 KJV

- Endure [predestined are those that endure until the end and do not die in sin]

And ye shall be hated of all men for my name's sake: but he that shall [endure unto the end,] the same [shall be saved.]

Mark 13:13 KJV

- Repent from sin [or All will likewise perish]

I tell you, Nay: but, [except ye repent,] ye shall [all likewise perish.]

Luke 13:3 KJV

It's really crazy how God brought me to Jackie Perry, and this particular book in the Bible, because it hits Home when she said that she "is not ignorant to a room full of Women who suffered"

and the suffering of Hagar being a slave, and then God Telling her to go back to her mistress,

and Ms Perry being very meticulous on a room for a woman and what we suffer and then having to deal with that, but given it to God even if God has not allowed us to let our past go which is talked about in proverbs 4:23 about guarding our heart and letting go things that have been done to us because God's
Revenge is more powerful and suffering to the person that condemned us of having those demons

it's way more powerful than anything a human being could do

And I sit back, and I think of even though I walk with God and Jesus and the Holy Ghost and blind Faith because I do sometimes sometimes question certain things like that was one of the biggest things I question why in the Old Testament was slaves allowed when God runs the world so I'm glad she really broke that down and allowed me to understand that sometimes God put certain people in certain positions in certain times in your life to get a certain word that you need to understand so you can continue to walk in his faith and not go back to the world because it feels so much better

@getjaynesmith4770

HUGE Sidenote (please forgive me):

It just occurred to me HOW MUCH God's people's keeps turning to Egypt for solutions, safety, security... Instead of the Lord. And there's no honesty or respect or consideration of these Egyptians as people and the impact of these godly people's ungodly decisions on them. Even to this day, when WE as God's people have expectations from the Lord, and we try to secure them (our positions or expectations) ourselves, we usually don't consider the personhood of the people we involved or use to get there. We focus on our needs or our great moments of faith, but we don't acknowledge our sin, or that we involve others in our sin and that we endanger them and drive them away from where they should encounter the Lord Almighty. Hagar separated herself from God's people. Pharoah had to separate himself from Abram and Sarai.

It's wonderful that regardless of what the people of God did, the LORD intervenes to set things right (in particular where women weren't protected). Lord communicated to Hagar - not his people. He gave her a hope and a future, a reassurance and promise. God made Abram's sin known to Pharoah, not Abram or Sarai. The Lord exposed their lie. The Lord did that to save the ones who had been subjected to the sins of others.

I love how Jackie talked about Jesus on the cross, how the Son of God submitted to suffering... that was for our sins - the sins of others, not any he had committed. Our sins were put on him. He not only took OUR sins, but the sins of others put on us, on our bodies and souls, too - trespasses against us like trespasses against him. There is redemption. He meets us with redemption in suffering.

I had never thought about, until this sermon, Jesus's body being violated. His nakedness exposed to the world on top of being disfigured. The disdain showed to him to have his nakedness exposed.

When a woman was caught in adultery (Guess the man was too quick to get away cause he wasn't "caught"), I don't know if they brought her to Jesus with clothes or not. Presumably not, but Jesus averted his eyes. While they heaped shame onto her, he didn't look. He focused on the words He was writing in the same earth He used to create humankind. He didn't look upon her nakedness. He didn't look at or address her until he was covering her with grace and forgiveness. Jesus was the same way with the "sinful woman" who washed Jesus' feet with her tears. He didn't look at her until he was forgiving her. In both cases, using His Word to protect the women from accusers, first.

I think again about Jesus' nakedness on the tree, his exposure, and all the sins I've committed with my body and the sins committed against my body that he took upon himself. All the shame heaped on me that he let them heap onto him.

God redeemed Hagar and her suffering through her son. He redeems us and our suffering through His Son.

@@krissysworld888 I’m glad you decided to watch it. I really do believe the Lord put this message in Jackie’s heart for everyone (because even those who aren’t hurting atm can take something from it) but especially those of us who are suffering and needed a comforting word to keep enduring.

I pray for you as well, that Gods will be done on your life, whether its the Lord opening your womb or the Lord blessing you in a different kind of way, that you see His goodness in the midst of it, even right now when it’s hard and it doesn’t make much sense.

@kesha2414

Such an awesome word, regardless of the season we find ourselves in. Thank God for this surrendered & obedient vessel. The Lord truly did (and does) use you. Sidenote...Jackie, you are beautiful sis.

Edit-Not beautiful in appearance only, but more importantly, beautiful because you mirror the glory of God. What a blessing & an honor.
