The First Noel
Jackie Wilson Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

The first Noel, the angel did say,
Was to certain poor shepherds in fields as they lay;
In fields where they lay keeping their sheep,
On a cold winter's night that was so deep.
Noel, Noel, Noel, Noel,
Born is the King of Israel.

They looked up and saw a star
Shining in the the East, beyond them far;
And to the earth it gave great light,
And so it continued both day and night.
Noel, Noel, Noel, Noel,
Born is the King of Israel.

And by the light of that same star,
Three wise men came from country far;
To seek for a King was their intent,
And to follow the star wherever it went.
Noel, Noel, Noel, Noel,
Born is the King of Israel.

This star drew night to the northwest,
O'er Bethlehem it took its rest;
And there it did both stop and stay,
Right over the place where Jesus lay.
Noel, Noel, Noel, Noel,
Born is the King of Israel.

Then entered in those wise men three,
Full reverently upon their knee;
And offered there in his presence,
Their gold, and myrrh, and frankincense.

Noel, Noel, Noel, Noel,
Born is the King of Israel

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Jackie Wilson's "The First Noel" tell the story of the night of Jesus' birth. As the angels appear in the sky, they tell the news of the savior's arrival to a group of poor shepherds. The scene is set with the cold winter night and the shepherds keeping watch over their flocks. The arrival of the angel and news of the birth of the king must have been such an awe-inspiring moment, as marked by the repeated 'Noel' in the chorus. The shepherds must have been filled with wonder and faith as they gazed upon the sky, basking in the light of a shining star.

Before long, three wise men arrive, traveling from afar after following the star in the sky. They seek the new king, and discover him in Bethlehem, where the star stopped. The wise men come bearing gifts of gold, myrrh, and frankincense. The portrayal of the wise men is one of reverence and humility as they humbly offer their treasures to this sleeping baby. The lyrics of "The First Noel" seamlessly weave together the different aspects of the story of the birth of Jesus, and convey a message of hope, joy, and praise.
