Come Back To Me
Jackie Wilson Feat. The Dominoes Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

When the swallows come back to Capistrano
That's the day you promised to come back to me
When you whispered, "Farewell", in Capistrano
Twas the day the swallow flew out to sea

All the mission bells will ring
The chapel choir will sing
The happiness you'll bring
Will live in my memory
When the swallows come back to Capistrano
That's the day I pray that you'll come back to me

All the mission bells will ring
The chapel choir will sing
The happiness you'll bring
Will live in my memory

When the swallows come back to Capistrano
That's the day I pray that you'll come back to me

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to "Come Back to Me" by Jackie Wilson Feat. The Dominoes revolve around the theme of hope and longing for a lost love to return. The first verse talks about how the return of the swallows to Capistrano is the day the singer's lover had promised to come back to them, but instead they left on the same day the swallows flew out to sea. The second verse talks about the happiness and memories that the return of their lover would bring.

The imagery of the swallows returning to Capistrano is used as a symbol of hope for the singer's lost love to come back to them. The mention of the mission bells ringing and the chapel choir singing also adds to the emotive aspect of the song, and gives the impression that the singer is hoping for a miracle to happen. Not just women. Ask Sinatra. Ask Elvis. Ask Berry Gordy! Gordy: "Though I would go on to have many exciting times in my life, the release of our first record on Jackie Wilson ranks among the top. Jackie took 'Reet Petite', a so-so song and turned it into a classic...Jackie's big booming voice blasting for millions all over the country, and all those white kids dancing up a storm to my song." Jackie was the cross-over star of his day, equally popular with all audiences, black, white, Jewish...

@Dee530 Thanks very much for the kind words! This song came from the Dominoes' brief sojourn with Jubilee records. For whatever reason, many of the songs they recorded there were either never released or didn't chart very high. The songs were once released on a now rare CD called "The Dominoes Meet the Ravens." I'll be posting more Jubilee-period Dominoes soon.
