i seem to tumble in the wind
i wait for it to begin
when i look at you
i ain't too proud to say
i once loved a girl this way

i bring trouble on my lonesome self
i see danger in each offered help
times are hard
the money just won't come through
i would be alone if not for you

they brought me in on a flatcar
down from old hong kong
tried to tell me what i was doing
was absolutely wrong
tried to make me over
into a man of steel
but i knew i would have to kneel

from the plains of alberta
with its wheat so wild and strong
i rolled over the Northlands
till i came to saskatchewan
from a hardback in my satchel
i read the words quite clear
hurry home to your loved ones now
wintertime is near

i seem to tumble in the wind
i wait for it to begin
when i look at you
i ain't too proud to say
i once loved a girl this way

This man suffered so much pain, physical, emotional, psychic, and his sound is so raw, nothing filtered. But compared to his early work I hear an element of contentment in this, as though he has been through every heartache and misery imaginable and he's still singing, composing and picking guitar, there's nothing more the world can do to him and nothing that can stop his music coming through.

I see this in the photo too. You don't have to know his story to see that this man had a very hard life, but I see that contentment there also. Not too long previous he had been homeless, literally a target for random violence, exposed to the elements and in desperate need of care. Where was his next meal coming from? Where was it safe to sleep? To have four walls around him and a roof overhead, people looking after him, appreciating and recording his music, feeling safe, and still playing, writing and singing so well, must have been such a blessed relief for him, some respite at last. Even the cigarette in his mouth tells a little story, when he was on the streets he would likely have been cadging them or picking up butts.

Jackson C Frank had so much courage, character and intelligence, and such extraordinary musicality. I hope my assessment is true and his final years did give him some of the respite, contentment and satisfaction that were denied him for so long.

This song was actually cowritten with me,in 1997. The chords are simple--capo on 5th fret, G chord with descending bass to Em, C chord, G chord in the first line, then the same for the second line except change the last G to D.....then C chord, G chord desc to Em, the last line G desc to Em C to D to G

@lumomagus

You know Jackson was not only burned on the face in a fire as a young man, but also shot in the eye by a boy shooting at homeless people with a pellet gun in Central Park (Jackson was homeless for two decades).  You see that face?  These are the blues.  Jackson knew the blues.  Look up Blues Run the Game.  He's an old soul.  Cheers to Jackson C Frank.
