Come, they told me pa-rum pum pum pum
Our newborn King to see, pa-rum pum pum pum
Our finest gifts we bring pa-rum pum pum pum
To lay before the King pa-rum pum pum pum
Rum pum pum pum. rum pum pum pum
So to honor Him pa-rum pum pum pum
When we come
Little Baby pa-rum pum pum pum
I am a poor boy too, pa-rum pum pum pum
I have no gift to bring pa-rum pum pum pum
That's fit to give our King pa- rum pum pum pum
Rum pum pum pum, rum pum pum pum
Shall I play for you, pa-rum pum pum pum
on my drum?

Mary nodded pa-rum pum pum pum
The Ox and Lamb kept time pa-rum pum pum pum
I played my drum for Him pa-rum pum pum pum
I played my best for Him pa -rum pum pum pum
Rum pum pum pum, rum pum pum pum

Then He smiled at me pa-rum pum pum pum
Me and my drum

Overall Meaning

The Jackson 5's version of "Little Drummer Boy" describes the journey of the three wise men (or Magi) who were informed of a newborn king and went to visit him. They bring him gifts, including frankincense, myrrh, and gold, and play their drums to show their adoration. The singer of the song is a poor boy with no gift to bring, but he offers to play his drum for the baby. Mary, the mother of Jesus, nods her approval, and even the animals present (an ox and lamb) keep time to the beat. The boy plays his drum as best as he can, trying to honor the infant king, and is rewarded with a smile from the baby.

Michael was so gifted and so were Jackie, Tito and the rest of the brothers singing in the background. And let's not forget the orchestra!
