Desperados Under the Eaves
Jackson Browne & Warren Zevon Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I was sitting in the Hollywood Hawaiian Hotel
I was staring in my empty coffee cup
I was thinking that the gypsy wasn't lyin'
All the salty margaritas in Los Angeles
I'm gonna drink 'em up

And if California slides into the ocean
Like the mystics and statistics say it will
I predict this motel will be standing until I pay my bill

Don't the sun look angry through the trees
Don't the trees look like crucified thieves
Don't you feel like Desperados under the eaves
Heaven help the one who leaves

Still waking up in the mornings with shaking hands
And I'm trying to find a girl who understands me
But except in dreams you're never really free
Don't the sun look angry at me

I was sitting in the Hollywood Hawaiian Hotel
I was listening to the air conditioner hum
It went mmm...

Look away
(Look away down Gower Avenue, look away)

Overall Meaning

Desperados Under the Eaves is a bittersweet song that explores the loneliness and isolation of life in Los Angeles. The song begins with the singer sitting in the Hollywood Hawaiian Hotel staring blankly at his empty coffee cup. He thinks about the predictions of the Gypsy that all the salty margaritas in Los Angeles will be drunk up before the state slides into the ocean. He then wistfully muses about the motel still standing even if California compels him to leave the place. The thoughts on the impending doom of the state and its people leave the singer feeling helpless and hopeless.

The singer then describes the anger in the sun and the trees that look like crucified thieves. He feels like a desperado under the eaves - living on the fringe, forgotten and lost. He acknowledges that leaving is hard, but staying isn't easy either. He wakes up every morning with shaking hands, looking for a girl who can understand him, but finds that he is never really free. He sits there listening to the hum of the air conditioner, trying to drown out the loneliness with noise.

The song perfectly captures the sense of alienation and detachment that people feel while living in a big city, particularly a city like Los Angeles. The singer's despair is palpable, and the images of the sun looking angry and the trees resembling crucified thieves are powerful metaphors that underscore the singer's feelings of hopelessness and despair.

I am pretty young and love Warren Zevon. He is my favorite solo musician ever. This is my favorite song by him. I have almost 50 songs by him in my music library. Rest In Peace Warren you are missed. I had a very rough childhood and am afraid I might become an alcoholic later in life.If this happens and I enter rehab this will probally be the song to help me through It. God Bless Warren Zevon.

One of the greatest songs ever written. Even in this stripped-down version, it is very moving. Few pop songs have a coda and this one is exceptional, even without a choir singing along. To my mind, this is his best. You are remembered Warren Zevon! RIP

@MDBrookman

He always stayed absolutely brilliant, even after his label dropped him and the radio stopped caring. This was definitely one of his best. This man is one of the greatest inspirational characters I've ever laid my eyes and ears on.

This is a great version. I enjoy the orchestration of the studio version, but there's something about the sparseness of this arrangement -- none of the lyrics get lost. Thanks for posting! RIP Warren

@smiddlecn

This version of Desperados was new to me. Thanks for sharing it! Warren Zevon was a totally amazing musician and songwriter.

@bartonone2005

No matter how many times I hear this song, it brings tears to my eyes just like it did the first time I heard it. I pray you are at peace Warren Zevon and I send you much love. You are missed! RIP!

@MichaelDoherty1981

I agree, this is the best version. This whole concert was phenomenal! Every song a masterpiece!

@PhilBaird1

Have just discovered this version and I think you're right, it even beats the orchestrated version on the original album. A great American song up there with Paul Simon's American Tune. It has always been my favourite Warren song and it's nice to know others feel the same way too. We miss him but songs like this just get better with the passing years.

@TheBigDelicious

A couple minutes of humming can tear your heart. Blessing, Warren. Hear and see you soon. Margaritas on me.

@bossman5822

The most underrated Musician ever.
